What size bike

My 3 yo is 42.5 in tall and I am starting to look at bikes as we plan on buying him one in the spring. I'm looking online just to get an idea of pricing but I don't remember what size I should be looking at. Can someone fill me in? We looked at balance bikes a few months ago but DS wants a "real bike".

12 inch, it sucks that he will outgrow it quick but he is too little for a bigger bike.

I would say a little bigger than 12"  Probably a 16".  we bought my son a 12" bike for his 3rd birthday in march and by the end of the summer it was on the small side and he is not 42".  We were going to do bikes for the kids for Christmas, but decided against it since it is better to take them to the store to try them out for size.

DD1 was 41.5" at 3 years and started off with a 16" bike with training wheels. That worked until last summer when she turned 6. At 6 years and 50" we moved her to an 18" bike. We could almost have gone with a 20", but she still needs the training wheels, and I think it would be too hard for her to learn with a bigger bike.

Look at performance bike online, they have a sizing chart for kids. Also, we took DD to toys r us and told her we were just testing them. She rode a few bikes in each size so we could see how she did. At 38 inches the size 12 fit her and was almost too small. We went with a 14 inch instead. 12 seems small if your LO is that tall.

While we did a 12 inch bike for our boys, they learned quickly how to ride without training wheels at 5 yrs old and then 4 yrs old. we need to find the traihing wheels for our youngest too! But they did grow out of this size quickly once we took the training wheels off.
