NBR: Being Grateful

I teach middle school in a super-low income inner-city school, and we were writing about what we are grateful for this week, since most of the kids at my school come from families that can't afford a Christmas tree, let alone presents to put under it, so the traditional "what I want for Christmas" was out. They wrote about things like having family, being alive (especially after last Friday's tragic events), and some really touching things, but there was one event on Thursday I wanted to share with you because I was so moved.

I have a student who is essentially being raised by her grandmother (mom is physically present in the home but emotionally absent for a myriad of reasons). Her birthday is Christmas Eve, and on Thursday her grandmother surprised her with cupcakes for the class. She was so moved that her grandma spent $25 on her, and that her mom showed up, that she started crying. I have never seen such gratitude on a child's face; I almost started crying too. Like last weekend's events, it made me reflect on all the things I take for granted, and made me appreciate being able to give DS a good first Christmas, but this time it's a happy story instead of a devastating one.

Sorry if this was long(ish) - with all the sad stories we hear these days, I thought you might like an uplifting one. Cheers!

Thank-you so much for sharing!  That's truly all kids really want isn't it?  For their moms and dads to be there.  Sure other things get added on top of that list, but it's the truth and how lovely to see such joy and delight on this childs face.  I bet that did some healing in her heart that day.  Makes me thrilled too!

I also reminds me (sadly) of the conversation I had with my stepson on Christmas day.  I called him to wish him a Merry Christmas (before my dh came over and I knew that he was coming over), and he answered the phone so delighted and happy.  But, then he realized that I wasn't his dad and his heart sunk :(  His dad hadn't called him and he tried to put a brave face on, but here's a 14 year old boy..living with his grandfather, and all he wants is to hear from his dad.  I know all too well just how true your above story is...
