Insurance whine/vent/cry

Sorry I'm being a PW today..

I just got our health insurance statement in the mail... $1553!!! WTF! There goes my holiday spirit..

Ok, I knew it was going to go up adding the twins. But I was told (by DH's cousin who handles all my insurance stuff) that I would only be pay for one of the twins and whether you had 2 or 8 kids you only pay for 2. WRONG!

So for Jackson and I, I was paying $533/month. (it was cheaper to pay for our own rather than being on DH's insurance through work)

Now I will pay $877/month for the 4 of us. The $1553 is because when I added the twins December was already billed out so we owe for Nov. & Dec. and now Jan.

I can lower my coverage since I will not be needing maternity anymore but we will still be paying $650-$700/month.

Oh and the $1553 is due by the 1st... FML! Luckily they have a 10 day grace period and when I called the lady told me as long as it's paid before the 13th I would be ok.

I don't even know what to do. Obviously we need insurance but does everyone really pay this much? I know most people go through their employer but last time DH checked it was something like $350/month to add Jackson and I pay $172 for him so it didn't make sense to switch.

If you pay privately for your health insurance, how much do you pay? (if you don't mind sharing..)

Holy cow! We have insurance through my employer & for "Employee + Family" (which I understand includes any number of children) I pay $292/month for medical, $13 for dental, and $9 for vision.

I'm ready to climb the walls, too, buddy.

Usually they should have a family plan which is the husband and wife and however many kids for a set price a month. Through my job at the hospital it is about 400 a month I think. Thankfully DH is in a union so he gets "free" health insurance. It's "free" because the way they do his salary in he union is he technically gets paid twice as much an hour as his paycheck says but they take out the insurance, dues, etc and then he is left with his hourly pay, which is still extremely generous compared to non union employees in his field. So I have no idea how much the insurance is but if I had to guess its probably about 400 to 500 a month for all of us and does not cost extra to add extra kids.

I wish my DH still had his union job..The money was great!

I'm union too.. But when we had insurrance with H's company I think we paid 127 a week. That was te family plan and it didn't change with how many kids you have. If I went through my company and not the union, it goes off single with kids, or married with kids and you pay more for each kid. I think that worked out to 119 a week for the 4 of us.

DH got his license (HVAC) right after DD was born and at the exact time his company was going under (it was a non-union company) and they got bought out by a union company, so he lucked out big time!  It is really hard to get into a union company around here unless you're already in the union.  It's the sole reason we were able to buy a house, afford things, etc.

Holy cow that's a lot of money. I couldn't afford that much for health insurance each month. Wow. Just doesn't seem right.

My coverage is free as the employee. I pay 90/mo for each dependent. You max out after 3 dependents. Last year I was only paying 50/mo for each dependent. So that was a jump for us, but I knew it was still cheap compared to what others pay.

I think the maxing out after a certain number of dependents is typically only with group insurance.  When we had individual coverage, we paid for each kiddo.

I get lucky at work and my medical/dental/vision is all 100% covered for me and the family.

Maybe check in with your DH's HR dept and see if it would be any cheaper or if they have that maxing out plan.  I know you said it made more sense when it was just adding you and J to go individual, but maybe its not the case with the twins now?  Worth a shot....

DH is going to check with his work. He tried calling the HR lady yesterday but she was already off for the holidays. Hopefully she will be back next week and we can look into it.
