Holiday question

DH and I are supposed to go to my aunt's for Xmas this year. Her grandson (my cousin's son) was just diagnosed and admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. We don't know yet if it's viral or bacterial, but he's had a bad fever for the past few days. The doctor said he's hopeful that the little man will be released by tomorrow which I'm happy about (for him) since no child should be in the hospital for Christmas.

But honestly, I am a little worried. Should DH and I still be going to my aunt's house with us being this close to delivery? I'm really concerned that one of us is going to get really sick and thus will interfere with us being allowed in the NICU, etc. Not to mention the fact that I don't know what pneumonia exposure does to unborn babies....

Thoughts? Opinions? I don't want to be "that" person, but I need to put my children and family first.

I don't know the real answer but pretty sure you need to avoid anyone with a fever for sure but also anyone sick, just not worth the chance. Hope he gets out soon and feels better! GL to you!

It's aweful timing, but I think I would avoid being around the little guy. I don't think there is any risk from exposure for your LO, but for you and YH, yes. You don't want to risk being sick for delivery.

I am confused what a shocker...but is that contagious? I guess I was under the impression that it wasn't. Agree about avoiding if someone has a fever though. Colds and stuff you may not br able to avoid w the holidays, but if I had a fever, I would stay home myself.

Hey ducky.  I don't know, I've read a ton of different things (contagious vs. not). I guess my biggest fear is that we are fairly certain we are looking at NICU time with our IUGR twin. I just can't imagine DH or I being sick and not being allowed in the NICU to see our own baby(ies). I have to imagine that the NICU would have to be pretty strict on ill parents visiting their children as they would be exposing other people's babies to their germs.

I think you know your answer then. If it is a big concern of yours then don't go. Thats what i would do. I hope you can go somewhere else though to celebrate!

Augh my phone is making my responses come out funny! Anyway, you need to be comfortable. If you aren't, then you need to avoid what is making you feel uncomfortable, ya know?

If he has been treated at the hospital, the risk of spreading pneumonia is very low. Just don't share drinks, utensils, or anything and you should be fine.  Maybe wash your hands more often and stay out of sneezing distance if you want to be extra cautious. I don't think the risk is high enough to stay away.

If he's been treated with antibiotics/antivirals for more then 24 hours he's not contagious anymore.  HOWEVER, he's somehwat immune-comporised from being ill and has been in a hospital full of other sick people, so who know's what germs he's carrying?  You've made it this far, and with twins, and an IUGR twin at that, I'd probably stay away.

TTC since Aug 2011, RE since May 2012.
