Vitamin k shot

Anyone considering taking vitamin k supplements while breastfeeding instead of doing the newborn shot?  I'm not sure what we're doing yet- just looking for info.

I don't think that's how it works. I've heard of giving it to the infant orally, but even that doesn't make sense. If you think it's important, why wouldn't it be important enough to give by the proven and proper method?

I have heard of that but we just skipped it all together. We were open to the oral Vit K if necessary though. Babies also begin to produce their own Vit K by day 8, just an FYI.

This.  Newborns are born without vitamin K, which plays an important part in the blood clotting cascade. I think the vitamin K is important and to me the benefits of the shot outweigh the risks.

No. I'm fine with the shot (and the alternative is orally for baby, not orally for mom). It is a preventative measure with no risks that I've heard of. I put this in the same category as a dose of pitocin to prevent hemorraging in the mother. I'll never know if either was absolutely necessary, but I'll take them over the alternative "wait and see" that has the potential to be too late.

I wasn't up for taking the volume needed in the last third trimester to boost it high enough for my milk. My MW was happy to walk me through how to do it, but I was having gagging issues and just getting/keeping down my PNVs was enough. I also wasn't up for doing it nutritionally for similar reasons. That said, out of the options, this one is most appealing to me in terms of how the mom/baby dyad naturally works.

We did oral Vit K for DS2. His birth was not in a hospital and the shot was not available (thanks wacky laws in my state). The "best" option for a shot shortly after birth was to take him to urgent care or an emergency room--no way! The oral was very easy. We did it at birth, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks.

For DS1, we did the shot.  He was born in the hospital, so it was available. Plus, it was a long, challenging birth which raised our concern about unknown trauma to him).

We really weight the benefits vs the risks, I've never been 100% comfortable with the vit K shot, but the conclusion we came to was that the risk of not giving it to them outweighed the risk of giving it to them, so we decided to go with it. It's something we discuss about with each birth, we may look into the oral option this time since it's a smaller dose.

I'll decline the shot and go for the oral administration if there's an emergency / necessity. Otherwise, I'll take the supplement myself the first few weeks for the BF method.

We declined the Vit K shot, used no supplements, had DS1 circumcised on day 2 (though the religious reason to wait until day 7 coincides with a natural peak of Vit K, we were more comfortable having it done at the hospital than the peds office "just in case") and still had no clotting issues.

Recently I've been doing a lot of research on this topic and have found that measurements of Vit K in newborns are based of off normal levels for adults resulting in a shot that is an extreme amount over what a newborn actually even needs. Generally, as long as your diet consists of Vit K enriched foods (green leafy stuff) then your newborn has proper levels at birth and if you breastfeed can get it from you until they naturally start to produce it themselves. Now by no means am I saying you're wrong for choosing to have your newborn receive this shot, but if you feel that its necessary, opt for it to be given orally. Its a lower dose and goes where the vitamin is needed. However, it should be discussed prior since most hospitals don't carry it.

I've never heard of the mother taking it. I just waited until my LO was born to decide. I had a long homebirth with his shoulders getting stuck, so it was an easy decision to give him the shot. Trust your instincts. Through my pregnancy and now as a mother I feel very in tune with my body and with my son.

Another thing to think about is baby getting oral vit K can disrupt the gut's flora for BF babies.
