When are you making the switch?

When are you switching your LO to a milk other than breast milk or formula?

1. Working on it now?

2. 11 months

3. We're waiting until LO is a year

4. 12 months+

***feel free to explain anything I've missed.

Late winter / early spring as recommended by my ped.
About 1 year.
ETA that depends on how he handles the weaning process.

I am at least waiting until Ava's 1 year appointment on 2/5.  I am guessing her ped will tell us it is okay to switch then, but Ava is on the smaller side so I just want to make sure we are on the same page.  And obviously I will use up the rest of the formula we have left, not going to waste any of that with how expensive it is.

We've already made to switch.  Logan starting rejecting formula around 9.5-10 months.  It was a fight to get him to drink it - he would spit it out.  I honestly didn't want to spend the money looking for a different formula he might drink.

I asked our doctor and he said we could switch to whole milk.  I found something called toddler milk, which is wcm with extra vitamins/nutrients, so I mix the two. Logan won't drink the toddler milk straight.  I still nurse him first thing in the morning and right before bed. We're weaning off nursing for naps this week. He eats quite a bit of solids (finger foods & purees) though - around 18-20oz / day. I'm thinking of investing in liquid vitamin drops too.

After the first of the year, we're going to start transitioning him (work our way to I believe it's 16 oz a day - going to confirm with my ped), but he won't be completely off formula until after his 1 year appointment. I want confirmation from his ped that he's growing well enough to be completely off of it. But, as we speak, he gets WCM in a sippy cup with breakfast and dinner. He likes it and slurps it right down, but it doesn't replace his formula intake.

4. I'm going to introduce whole milk as soon as he's feeling better, just in case it doesn't agree with him. I don't want him dealing with multiple things making him feel awful. My goal is to BF for 2 years, unless he wants to wean earlier, so WCM won't be replacing BM until then. I expect I'll have it replace water or juice occasionally though.

We kinda already did. I still nurse Jackson, but he gets WCM at all of his meals. We started right before he was 10 months because my supply took a major dip when AF arrived.

We are making the switch now.  DS drinks about 8 oz of formula a day.  We give him WCM for breakfast and dinner and water/juice through out the day.  He doesn't finish a full cup of milk, so I will discuss that at the pediatrician.  He eats plenty of table food, so I am not too worried about his milk consumption at this point.  He eats cheese/yogurt at least once a day, if not more.

We started right after his 11 month appt. Our pedi said we could try 34 oz a day and see how he does and so far so good. But other than the 4 oz he gets in his sippy he is still getting formula till he turns one.

Not until at least a year.

I still need to research this one & I forgot to ask the pedi about it yesterday, so I figure I'll just ask at his 12 month appt. LO's diet is still primarily milk. Does cow's milk have the same nutrition as breast milk or formula? If it doesn't, I don't see switching until he is eating a lot more solids.

We will wait until he's a year and then switch. My pedi is very laid back, but was pretty adamate he was on formula until 1 year, so that's what we'll do. I plan on weaning to wcm but going cold turkey with bottles.

Ideally, we're waiting until a year.

However, with the way my milk supply has been (I have been fighting a sinus infection for over a month which is making pumping at work impossible), I called the dr this week and got permission to supplement with WCM before he's one if I need to. But we're talking like 1-2oz of WCM a day.

I will stop pumping at a year, and will start having the babysitter give him a cup of WCM with lunch instead of a bottle of breast milk, but I'm going to keep letting him nurse for as long as he wants to.

My understanding of the whole concept of switching to WCM at a year is that from 1 year on their primary source of the vitamins/nutrients they need should be from food/drink versus formula.  Milk definitely doesn't contain all that formula does, but it is a way for the infant to get the "good" fats that they need for brain development.  I don't think that we are to be replacing formula with milk ex: giving them milk in a bottle several times a day.  I think the general idea is 3 healthy meals per day with 2 healthy snacks and offering a sippy cup of milk with meals, but not necessarily pushing them to drink a certain number of ounces of milk per day.  Please somebody correct me if I am wrong, because I am going solely off things I have read online and I have not discussed this in great detail with my pediatrician yet.

I am waiting to talk to the pedi at Abby's 1 year visit (1day after she is 1).  We have started offering her small sips in her sippy cup after dinner once in a while just to get her used to the taste.  But I want to talk with the pedi about amounts and food intake in general.  My goal is to be done with formula by the end of February, depending on how she handles the transition.

I don't remember if you are feeding BM, formula or a mix of both. I'm not sure about formula, but the nutritional make up of BM continues to change past 1 year. From 12 -18 months, a baby can get all the nutrition he needs on a diet consisting of 75% BM and 25% solids. It is perfectly okay if your LO isn't eating many solids at 12 months, but that's something you want to take into consideration when deciding to switch to WCM.

Here's some info that you might want to ask his pediatrician about:

All I know is that I want to stop pumping at 1 year, but I don't know if I can commit. Same as PP...Colton isn't eating solids nearly enough to rely on them for significant nutrition. Most of his food ends up on the floor or in the dog's belly.

Yeah, I don't think the same thing applies for formula or breastfeeding. With breastfeeding I think there are a whole different set of recommendations.

We are kind of working on it now. I gave DD sme WCM right after 9 months to see how she handled it. I wanted to know if this was going to be a long process or not.

She likes WCM so I let her have some each day. I'm not going to fully switch until around 1 year.

We just saw the ped on Wednesday for Aria's wellbaby check. Because she's a skinny little thing [18lbs, 13oz, 29 inches long], he wants us to keep her on formula until her 1 year appointment. [which will actually not happen until she's 13 months]

He said she could have milk on or in things, but that he didn't want us substituting milk for formula.

We're on formula. I've started giving him a little milk here and there with meals to get him used to it. I plan on gradually weaning to milk and no formula after he turns 1. I will not be going cold turkey with it...as I plan on getting him off a bottle at the same time. So I'll work on cutting out a bottle a time and replacing with milk in a sippy. I don't think it has to be a cold turkey kind of change.

I asked our pedi about when to start weaning and he said to wait until LO turned 1 year.  So, that's my plan.

I might offer WCM to him in a sippy cup at meals at home starting in Feb. (instead of water, that's what he gets in his sippy cup now), but it wouldn't replace a nursing session and/or BM bottle.

The girls finished their last bit of formula today and from now on will be on WCM. Our pediatrician said we could make the switch at 11 months so we started last week mixing a little milk with the formula and have been adjusting the ratio over the past week and a half. They eat a lot of solids and have been doing much better wih solids then with formula anyway.

I figured WCM was pretty different. I EP. I don't know if I am going to keep it up after a year or not. I was going to try for 18 months, but DS and I had stomach flu this month and my supply just took a heinous dip & the usual things that get it back up are not working. I don't know whether to try harder or give up. I am kind of sick of having crusty painful nipples though. lol. I am just scared to switch to WCM because DS is so skinny. I'm afraid he won't get as much nutrition. DH says that is what vitamins are for. I don't know- I'm scared! DS is still doing the chipmunk and not swallowing his food until I finally have to pull it out of his mouth & give up. He doesn't really want purees anymore though, he wants to feed himself. The boy will go to town on puffs/cheerios/yogurt melts- but he can't survive on that alone!

How does he do with solids? My girls are small but they've always followed their own growth curve and grown well. They do very well with solids so even though they're small and skinny our doctor said its fine to start WCM at 11 months. They usually drink 20-24 ounces of WCM/day and we try to make sure that they eat a varied diet of solids. Although I didn't ask about if they need vitamins once they're off formula, I'll have to call and ask since we just finished their formula yesterday.

Our pedi said that we could introduce it anytime after 11 months. I am currently still nursing morning & bedtime, and I don't plan to stop until about 18m. We'll do daytime bottles until my freezer stash and our formula is gone, then give him WCM.

We've made the switch to whole cow's milk. I still BF dd in the morning and before bed, but other than that she drinks milk and water. I'm in Canada, and they say here anywhere between 9-12 months to wean to whole cow's milk. They generally say to wean to formula first, but since DD's weight was good and she eats pretty much anything you put in front of her, my pedi said it was fine to just go straight to cow's milk. DD has had a few bouts of constipation since she started drinking it, but she absolutely LOVES dried prunes so we just give her those to counteract it, and it works great! (Sometimes a little TOO well).
