Salt dough handprint ornaments - baking help, please

DH took this on as his craft project for Christmas after my plan to make the snowman handprints on glass ornaments failed.  He made them with DD last night.

The blog that DH was working from said you need to bake them for 3 hours at 200 degrees.  After 3 hours, they were still a little soft in some spots and the color wasn't quite uniform.  I think those damn things were in the oven for 5 hours altogether last night, and DH was steadily increasing the temperature up to about 325 by the end of it.  He still said he didn't think they were quite done, but we weren't leaving the oven on all night.  They're now sitting on a cooling rack on our kitchen table, where they've been since last night.  DH said they might need to go back in the oven tonight.

If you did these, how long and at what temperature did you bake them?  We're painting them anyway, so I don't care if they get a little brownish, but I want them to be solid.  Is something wrong with our dough recipe or something?  This baking situation seems absurd!

i still need to do this again, but it was suggested on the site i was using to keep it at 200 degrees for 3 hours and if they weren't finished to flip them over and just keep baking for a few more hours.

i had mine in the oven for about 2 hours at 200* and just left them on the cooling rack since yesterday afternoon.

i'll just leave them out until they are hard enough to paint. i don't think it really matters if they are TOTALLY solid before you paint them anyway.

I made these, stuck them in the oven at 200 degrees, and forgot about them!  They were perfectly hardened like, 6 hours later!  I don't think you can overcook them at that temperature.

i did about an hour at 350 and they were hard as a rock. Good luck! I see lots of different ways to do it out there!

LOL I did exactly the same thing..6 hrs to the tee..I left the house at about 2.5 hrs and accidently forgot about them.  I practically ran in the door freaking out thinking that they were going to be burnt and ruined.  But, no, they were perfect!

I did the 200 degrees for 2 hours bake. Then left them to cool a while...

Forgot about them and flipped them in the morning and they were still wet. Baked them again for 2 hours or so at 200. Then left them to cool a day or so. Painted them. They look horrific. Left them in the oven to dry again so my kids didn't touch them. I'm undecided what to do with them they are so horrible looking. =)

You only have to bake salt dough to dry it out, if it's thicker in some places it will take more time to dry, hence the longer baking time.  You can either put them back in the oven or just leave them out for a few days to completely dry.  Make sure the color is uniform (that's how you'll know they're dry all the way) before you paint.

It has to be thin thin thin, too! Thinner than you think and and hour will be plenty of time.
