How much swelling is too much?

Hi ladies!

So I am currently 35 weeks along and each day I have become more and more swollen... When I say that my feet and leg look like elephant legs I am not joking.... like my feet are so swollen that the swelling now bubbles over and touches the floor.... and forget putting on shoes! It takes both me and DH to get any shoe on no matter the size of the shoe (I have gone up 2 sizes now).... and today my hands (which have been swollen for a while) and so swollen that I can't completely close my hands....

I have talked to my OB at multiple times about the swelling and each time they take my blood pressure and it's low... so basically all she says is if I don't have a headache then it isn't a big deal, even if it gets worst..

Has anyone else have swelling this bad? What have you done to make it better? I have been drinking plenty of fluids and I put my feet up higher than my heart but still no comfort..... Any suggestions on ways to make this swelling go down a little?

TIA!

I'm in the exact same boat. So much in fact they sent me for testing and special blood work. All came back totally normal. I'm just huge. Lol. My swelling is exactly like you say. But my blood pressure is always low and no protoen in my urine. And definetly no headaches. I'm just fat and swollen. Lol.

I'm not a doctor.....but I seem to be fine. And constantly monitored. So I just try and tough it thru. We deliver next week.

Good luck to you!!

I'm 36 wks and I just started getting more swollen as well. My cheeks are huge! I was in between weekly appointments and actually went to check my bp at Walgreen's and was totally fine. At my next appt the Dr. said that it's completely normal at this stage of pregnancy, to keep up with fluids, and it would all be over soon.. Ha! I'm not letting anyone take pics of me this Xmas that's for sure!

My doctor told me the only thing that "helps" is laying on your left side, propping up your feet whenever possible, and drinking lots of water. But she said this doesn't make it go away.....just helps it not be as bad.

That amount of swelling would warrant a visit to the doctor for me. I get swelling but it just causes an indent where my socks are, nothing as serious as what you said.

Eat lots of protein, salt your food to taste, and drink to thirst. Here's a good page on swelling and diet:

A doctor friend (not an OB) said his wife went swimming a lot when she was pregnant with their twins to decrease her swelling.  Low impact exercise that's relatively easy for pregnant women can help.

I had the same problem about a month ago when I was 30 weeks. I had been drinking a gallon of water a day (my doctor said drink to your thirst so I did). I was constantly thirsty (despite drinking all that water), had to pee all the time and had ridiculous swelling. It turned out that because I was drinking only water, at some point I created a mineral deficiency which led to my body not being able to process the water it was getting. This led to the extreme swelling in my extremities because the fluid was getting trapped there. Long story short, I now take mineral supplements and use Nuun tablets in my water to add extra electrolytes to keep things balanced. My swelling is dramatically reduced and so is my need to drink so much water.

I SOOO feel your pain!  I am 38 weeks and 5 days along I have been spending the day on the couch.  It has helped by not making my legs and feet extra swollen, like they usually are but they are still very big and uncomfortable.  I wish they could put a tube in to drain some of the fluid out!  So I can get up and complete my last few errands before the baby arrives and Christmas!  Hang in there girls!  We're in the home stretch!

Cool towels, teds stockings for your legs, water, swimming/baths, move your legs and hands even when propped up on the couch so fluid doesn't get trapped, have DH massage you almost like pulling fluid down and out, cut down on salt and eat lots of fruits and veggies. GL! I was super swollen with DD, a little less with DS, and barely even noticeable this time around.
