LO eating less

DS is breast and bottle fed BM. He usually nurses on and off for 40 minutes and if he takes a bottle he eats anywhere between 75cc to 110cc. For the past few days, he will only nurse 10 minutes...I know babies get more efficient, but overnight? So I've been giving him bottles more often to see how much he's getting since I'm worried he's not BF'ing as long and I'm having to push him to take 60cc....either because he is so sleepy he can't stay awake to take more of the bottle or he is just not acting very hungry. He doesn't have a fever. Not acting unusually fussy during meals. He is still having wet diapers, although they don't feel as heavily wet as usual. I plan to call the pedi...but just wondering if this is maybe normal. He is 5 weeks adjusted (2 and half months actual).

I FF but my LO did the same thing for a couple days, he's finially starting to finish 3oz again. Not sure why but I'm glad he's getting back up in his feedings. He has had a little cold, but no fevers or very fussy.

My LO went through something similar. I can't quite remember at what age... all the weeks seem to have blurred, but he was over a month.

Anyway, he slept ALL day and night and I couldn't really keep him awake to eat and when he was awake he had no interest in eating. Like you, I couldn't tell if he had just got more efficient or what. Diapers looked fine. No fever. We are EBF. It was very much out of character.

I called the nurse line. The lady went through a whole list of questions and couldn't find anything actually wrong, but since he was so young and it wasn't like him, she directed me to go to urgent care.

After much consideration and reflection on his actual behavior that day and talking to MH, my mom, dad and two mommy friends I decided to wait and see how the next feeding went and go from there.

The next feeding went just like normal and from there on out. It was definitely weird. A nurse called the next morning to check in and we both just chalked it up to a growth spurt.

LOs growth spurts don't always have to be by eating like frenzied vultures. Their bodies also really do know when to eat, IMO.

How long has this been going on?

ETA. I see now that you said a "few days".
My new question. When you say he takes so little from the bottle, are the bottle fed sessions completely independent of the BF sessions? Or do you offer the breast then after you think he didn't eat enough, offer the bottle? If it's the latter, I think he's probably eating enough. But you could call a LC or get a good scale and do a weighed feeding....?

Be optimistic. Don't you be grumpy. When the road gets BuMpY, just SMILE. smile. SMILE. and BE HAPPY. Don't wear a long face, it's never in style. Be optimistic and SMILE.

Yeah, I can't remember exactly how long this has been going on. Just yesterday, I thought "hmm, he hasn't been eating as much for the past few days..." I have both offered a bottle after breast-feeding if I think he didn't take enough at the breast...and offered a bottle independent of a BF session. And yeah, am thinking if this behavior continues, I will not only call the pedi but go in for a weighed feeding. Thanks for the reply!
