Seriously, Amex?

I just got an email from them saying, "did you know that you can carry a balance on your American Express Blue card?" and it went on to tell me to shop it up cause Christmas is coming!!

I am totally side eying them for encouraging people to rack up debt.

Also out of curiosity, I looked at my interest rate......29%....holy nutballs!!

Why are you side-eying a business for encouraging people to use it for its intended purpose?  I agree that it is an exorbitant interest rate, but that is why I don't haven an AmEx card.

Amex is awesome as long as you can pay it off every month.

I love AmEx too. I've never had a balance on it so I had no idea out interest rate was so high. I checked our other two cards and they are 9% and 5.6%

Yeah, I know...we get killer points on Amex, but if I think I'm going to carry a balance, I use my Mastercard. 5.6%, baby!

I would probably feel differently if they'd said, "facing a financial crisis? don't worry, you can carry a balance!"  Because, yeah, I can see needing to use a credit card to get through a tough time.

I think in the current economic state they shouldn't be encouraging people to shop it up. That's all. I just found it in poor taste.

We'll have to agree to disagree.  Also there are people who would feel that holiday shopping is a financial crisis.  I disagree with them, but they are out there.

I agree that the ad was in poor tastes - yea they make their money by people carrying a balance, but it still rubs me the wrong way.

Regardless, we don't carry a balance and my new Starwood Amex is awesome. Between that and our British Airways card, our trip to London next year is mostly covered.

Part of me thinks okay they are a business that benefits from you taking on debt and paying it off slowly.  However, I think the rate of 29% is ridiculous and makes me feel sorry for people who are unable to pay off their credit cards. :/
