I'm a FTM expecting my baby in about a month - so no experience yet. But just wanted to share that I'm in a similar boat as you (apartment-dweller, no in-unit laundry, coin-op machines in basement). If I were at the mercy of this set-up, I definitely wouldn't be able to even consider CD-ing - - but about a year ago I purchased a portable washer and some accessories, and have been so successful in doing our own regular laundry (clothes, linens, etc.) in unit that I am pretty sure the transition to CD will go okay, laundry-wise.
I agree with the PP's mention of lageorgiapaperie's blog, "The Accidental Wallflower" (http://www.theaccidentalwallflower.com)
If you're curious, here's some info on the portable washer that I own, and other accessories that I am hoping will make us a successful CD family.
The washer I own: Haier HLP21N. Info available on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Haier-HLP21N-Pulsator-1-Cubic-Foot-Portable/dp/B002UYSHMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356492325&sr=8-1&keywords=hair+hlp21n
Although I bought mine used for about $75 from Craigslist, it has worked out so well for me that if (heaven forbid) it broke tomorrow, I seriously would have no qualms about buying a brand new one.
I also own two drying racks, similar to this. I purchased mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond for around $25 apiece.
And I just purchased this retractable 5-line clothesline last week, to make it easier to dry sheets, blankets, etc. I've only used it twice so far, but I'm a fan and have no complaints (yet).
Hope this helps!
