Babies & rashes

I noticed Hadley had a rash on her stomach and chest on Friday night, it was light pink and kind of sporadic, but it was raised. You could actually feel it more than you could see it, like teeny tiny pimples almost. It was a little bit on her legs and back, but my gut said it was nothing to worry about. It really looks like dry skin and seemed to look less when I put lotion on it good after her bath.

She still has it today, but again her skin almost feels bumpy (but tiny little bumpy, not blister bumpy) more than a rash that you can actually see. Again, not really worried about it. As bad as the flu is here, it didn't even enter my mind taking her to the doctor... figure a rash is way better than being in a germy office.

Well, I sent a picture to my cousin Friday night (also next door neighbor) and she also said probably dry skin. Then last night they were together about 30 minutes to open their gifts from each other, thought nothing of it. Well I got a voicemail from my cousin at midnight saying her daughter had broke out in a rash, that she was taking her to the ER if it didn't go away in 30 minutes! I didn't take the call (I was sound asleep) and haven't got an update but I'm worried about her! I hope she doesn't think that we passed anything on to her? I can't imagine a rash bad enough to take her into a flu infested ER (they've actually said to not come to the hospital to visit or to the ER unless it was a true emergency).

Also a bit worried about Hadley... I looked up rashes on Dr Google and mercy, some of them look rough! I hope she didn't get something from her!

Her daughter hasn't had peanut butter yet (no reason other than they're nervous to give it to her, 19 months) and was eating chocolate chip cookies that a friend was there giving for Christmas. They were in a container with peanut butter cookies... think it could be a peanut allergy that much later? She was eating the cookies at 5:30 & I got the call at midnight.

Babies get weird rashes.  There have been a few times when Jack has had a random rash pop up and we never determine the cause, but it just goes away in a day or two.  Right now we have a weird situation where he breaks out in a weird rash on his trunk only (it's not pimply, and it's not hives, it's just a weird series of reddish bumps) every day around mid-morning.  It's gone by bedtime.  I've tried everything: changing up what he eats for breakfast, switching laundry detergents, etc, and we can not figure out what's causing it.  And it is never there when he wakes up in the morning, it happens during the day.  So weird.

Regarding your friend's baby, what other info did she give you about the rash (probably none, bc it was a voicemail, right?)  My understanding is that rashes related to a food allergy either appear in the form of eczema or affect the entire body.  It's totally possible that it is from something she ate, though.

Lurker here, my DS1 had a rash all over his belly at 13 months. It lasted a month and we took him to the pedi twice about it. Both times they said it could be from a fever he'd had around the time it showed up, or it could just be a random rash that had no reason to exsist. They just said to keep an eye on it, as long as he wasn't scratching or seemed uncomfrotable and it didn't spread then there was nothing they could do.
It finally went a way, and hasn't been back. Before the rash appeared he hadn't eaten any new foods or used a different kind of soap.
Edit: I wanted to add that the rash you're discribing sounds like the one DS1 had, it started bumpy and red then faded to his skin tone.

My girls have increadibly sensetive skin and exzema.  Skin rashes are nothing out of the ordinary here.

That said, if Hadley has a mild allergic reaction, a small dose of benedryl should take care of it.  You'd probably need to get dosing from the doc's nurse though.  The bottle is only marked for ages 6 & up.  (They gave me dosing when Dylan had hives at 6 mo).

Not sure what kind of rash Hadley could have, that does not bother her that may be contagious though.  I would call your friend back and see how her DD is.  If Hadley doesn't have a fever and is acting fine, I'd go w/ you and not take her in either.  Corizone cream and benedryl usually take care of most irritation we have (and benedryl is a last resort).

So the rash is just on her chest/tummy? I'm thinking it sounds more like a local reaction to something she was in contact with. Maybe a lotion, new shirt, or ot could be totally random. If she had cradle cap as a baby she might be more likely to develop atopic dermatitis, which essentially is a sensitive skin reaction. Or it "could" be a form of eczema. Ds1 has a pretty uncommon form of eczema that is very localized and results in a rash with red raised bumps in a circular pattern, and almost always on his legs.

What you're describing is making me think that it is just a skin reaction and not a food allergy. DS1 had a reaction to an antibiotic that resulted in red raised bumps ALL OVER. Also, I "think" that with a mild food allergy there would also bw a rash around the mouth.

Long story short...I would let the pedi have a look at it so you can determine what the rash is and what is causing it.
