Any tips on burping?

LO gets pretty gassy after nursing (I EBF) but we have a hard time burping him.  We burp him over the shoulder, then lie him tummy down across our lap, repeat back and forth for 30 minutes and we just *might* get a burp from him.  If he's fast asleep, he doesn't burp at all.  The problem is, he then gets really fussy and uncomfortable; or if he's asleep, he sleeps fidgety (waking up every few minutes to give out a yelp).  We often find him burping > 1 hour after feeding when we pick him up.

Do you have any effective way to burp your baby?  He seems so uncomfortable and miserable when he doesn't burp, and that makes us miserable too!

We sit her up, hold her head up just under the chin and rub and pat her back. We also rock her back and forth in that position.

This is what we do, too. I like it because I can see his face and I know if he spits up. I have also had to bicycle his legs a little to get him to burp.

You might look at your own diet to see if there's something you're eating making your LO extra gassy. I cut down on dairy (didn't completely cut it out) and LO seems to be less fussy after feeding.

Also, I learned and a Mom + Me group that I was feeding LO too fast. Slowing down his feeds and letting him take a good break between sides seemed to help a lot.

Are you patting him hard enough? Obviously, you don't want to do it hard, but you're only lightly patting him, you may be surprised that doing it a little harder may help.

I'm hesitant to give advice like this without a specific example, so I'd ask your Pedi if what your doing is hard enough the next time you go in.

I found when DD was younger we would have a hard time burping her and her not burping would result in her spitting up (I'm talking power puking) so I started burping her after less then 2 minutes after putting her on the breast. Turns out I have a really fast let down and she got quite a bit of milk right at the beginning so it was really easy to burp her if I first burped her right away then I would get another burp halfway through and then finish feeding her and burp her when she was done.

Another tip that has worked for us and for my nieces and nephews is giving them a bit of Ovol. For some reason, it works almost every time! Good luck! It gets better as they get older = )

We spent two weeks in the NICU. The nurses taught us to do an "altitude change."  We  have LO sitting on our knee with one hand under her chin/burp cloth and the other on her back. Give about 10 good pats and sandwich her between your hands and bend her down to where her head is below her butt. Bring her back up and starting patting. Repeat until you get a burp.

Also, I told my hubby he needed to put some force behind his burp attempts. He didn't listen to me and kept gently tapping LO. I told her do you hear that sound? It is the nurse taking care of the baby in the next crib. She is burping him and we can her the sound of her hand. I told him to man up and burp our kid before she gets upset. Now he is a champ.

Put him over your shoulder higher up so there is pressure from your shoulder on his tummy and lightly bounce while patting his back. My DS was like this too and now as soon as he hits my shoulder he burps.

Pat on the back on their left side at their stomach level. that is where the gas is trapped, works for me ever since I tried! Sometimes try for a few min and then try again a few min later.
