Name input

Since few of you make it over to the BNB.  DH and I are going round and round with girl names.  Last time we had tentatively agreed on Margaret Ann or Margaret Virginia, because randomly DH decided he didn't want to honor his mother but wanted to honor the state of Virginia instead (insert mega eye rolls) but A/S revealed a boy.  So here we are again confused over girl names.

Ann is to honor DH's deceased mother.  The meaning of the names is important to us as well.  We'd really like at least one of them to have a spiritual meaning or connection (such as a Biblical figure). For a long time we thought the name was Margaret Marianne.  Marianne would also honor my late grandmother, Marian, and Marian/Mary means "wished for child" and of course is after the Biblical Marys.  But we've decided to not name after my grandmother for some personal reasons and we're left with trying to find another way to get the spiritual meaning.

So here's what we got:

Margaret Ann- DH's favorite.  But aside from Ann being a form of Hannah, there's no spiritual or Biblical connection since we don't do saints.  I've always really liked Margaret, but paired with Ann it just doesn't seem to fit our criteria.

Margaret Marianne- since few people would probably connect it with Marian anyway.

Josephine Ann- DH's second favorite.  Josephine means "God will add" and is a feminine form of Joseph, a character in the Bible we love.

Ann Elizabeth- Elizabeth means "God is my oath" and is after the character Elisabeth in the Bible, who we really love.  This combination was first on our list for years.  DH just all of a sudden doesn't like Ann for a first name, but I still really do.

Elizabeth Ann-  Elizabeth has been on our short list for a first name for years.  The only reason why it hasn't been higher before is because DH has a crazy aunt named Beth but I think I'm finally ok with using it even if she thinks the baby is named after herself.

DS is Theodore Robert, nn Teddy, and our last name is two syllables, starts with B and ends with an "en" sound.  Oh, and we like nicknames.  They would be Maggie, Josie, Annie or Eliza.

You've liked Margaret the longest and Ann goes fine with it, especially since it honors DHs mother, so that's my pick.

However, I actually like Josephine Ann best.

Aren't you a Jane Austen fan too? My vote is for Elizabeth Ann because of Lizzie Bennett. :

Why not just Eliza Ann  if you are going to shorten. Isn't Eliza a bible name?

Lol, yes!  And Little Women.  So my book loves are all covered.  We hope to have 3-4 kids so if we had 2 girls Elizabeth would be either a first or a middle name.

So it's between Margaret, Josephine and Elizabeth?  Poor Amy gets left out!

Have you thought about nicknames?  Those 3 names lend themselves well to a lot of different nicknames:  Maggie, Meg, Molly, Joey, Jo, Beth, Ellie, Lizzie, Lisa, etc.  If there is a nickname you really like (or loathe)?  That might be something to consider too.

Amy was a brat!  Hahaha!  No, we thought Amelia nn Millie for a little bit which could kind of get Amy in there, but it felt forced.  Actually Beth doesn't do much for me as a character either so Elizabeth is from Pride and Prejudice.   I'm crazy, I know.

In my OP I mention the nicknames Maggie, Josie and Eliza.  I don't like Joey but I'm okish with Jo.  I like all of the Elizabeth nicknames, even though DH's crazy aunt is Beth.  Maggie is the only nn DH likes for Margaret but I like most of them.

Anne is Mary's mother, so Jesus' grandmother - not sure why you're saying there's no biblical significance to the name, unless I am misunderstanding.

I love the name Margaret (Maggie). Maeve/Moira are other versions of Mary. I like the nn Betsy for Elizabeth.

Your list is all classic, so anything is timeless. They are also good candidates for a double name.

Honestly, I like them all.

My personal preference, just based on what I personally like (not taking your meanings into account) is Elizabeth Ann followed very closely by Josephine Ann.  Eliza isn't my favorite nn for Elizabeth, but that is not a huge deal.  I love Josie.

That being said, use the name that you have loved the longest.  When I was pregnant with DD I went back and forth with a handful of names but ultimately went with Katherine because it was the name I had loved for the longest.  I knew that if Kate was my only daughter that I would regret not using the name for her one day.  And 3.5 years later I can say with certainty that I would have regretted using the other names on my list (because, while I liked them at the time my love has faded).

Because it seems that biblical meaning is important, could you do Margaret Elizabeth or Margaret Josephine?  You could even do Margaret Ann Elizabeth if you wanted.  Call her Mae.  hehe.

I do not like Margaret Marian.  It just looks too similar and matchy and I don't like the aliteration in this case.

My first pick is Margaret Ann. Probably my second is Josephine Ann. The only one I strongly dislike is Margaret Marianne, only because it is such a mouthful.

My cousin gave her daughter two middle names which were Elizabeth Ann. If you go that route then you could still use Margaret for the first name.

I've never heard of what Mary's mother's name was before.  Is this specific to certain denominations Biblical tradition?  I would want it to be more than just a name from the Bible, I want to feel connected to the story of the person too.  That's why I said Hannah and not Anna.  Though Anna is great too, but it's really the journey of these women (Hannah and Elizabeth) being blessed with children after struggling to conceive that is speaking to me.  Just figured that would make my long post even longer to explain!

I do love Betsy for Elizabeth.  DH says no but she could always like it later.  And I do like double names!  If Elizabeth or Josephine aren't in this round (if this is even a girl) and we have another girl the name will be Elizabeth Josephine nn Eliza Jo.  I love that combo, but I'm not sure I love it so much to put it aside in case there's ever a girl #2.  And Ann has to be somewhere in girl #1 and DH says no to 2 middle names.

I'm sorry, this statement is confusing me...

Out of your choices:

Margaret Ann- My favorite on your list.

Margaret Marianne- too rhymey, IMO.

Josephine Ann is okay. Josie is a cute nn though.

I do prefer Ann spelled Anne, but that is just me. I really like Elizabeth Ann (this is my mom's name!), but I dislike Eliza (though I agree with pp that if you plan to call her Eliza, then I'd just name her that since it's a strong standalone name).

I have always liked Lizzie but I abhor Liz. Just another suggestion.

Her eye roll was in response to her DH wanting to name the baby after Virginia (the state they live in).

Not about Teddy being a boy.

I agree. I'm really not a fan of Eliza. It doesn't really seem like a NN for Elizabeth to me. I feel like it's more of a stand alone name. I prefer Betsy, Ellie or Lizzie for NNs with Elizabeth.

A's initials make a name that I call her sometimes. It's on her new backpack/lunchbag and I wondered if her school friends might call her that.

Haha, sorry! Would never feel that way about a baby's sex!  I'm sure there was a less confusing way to say that.  And it's not that I hate Virginia as a name, just his reasoning got the eye roll.
