Giving up the pacifier?

Just curious when you ladies are thinking about retiring your LO pacifier? DD is totally dependent on hers. I've been working on weaning it for example only using it at night or when she's upset. She would keep it in 24/7 if I would let her. A friend told me today that we should stop using them at 12 months! I hadn't thought I would need to stop using them so soon! Any thoughts? What are your plans?

I think 12 months is the standard recommendation.  We're going to start weaning her off pacis at that age except for (as MH says) "special occassions," like getting shots.

Riley isn't super dependent on it. She uses it at naps and bedtime. I have no immediate plans to get rid of it. Even at 12 months I'll probably still let her use it

A only uses hers for sleeping or in the car.

She doesn't care for it while awake. She'll take it but then I end up searching for it because she drops its omewhere. 

I think we are going to try to drop it at one year.

Ian only really uses his for naps and bed time. If he's upset or not feeling good he wants it then too. He doesn't just go around all day with it in his mouth. And he doesn't always go down for a nap or bed with it, but there's one in his bed that he does usually get at some time. I don't plan on weaning any time soon necessarily, but like I said he doesn't have it all day anyway.

I posted the other day about weaning my lo off hers. We only use it at naps and bedtime an she totally dependent on it at thost times. We've weaned her of naps and she'll go to bed without it but if she wakes up at night it's the only thing that will calm her down. It's nice to know we're getting somewhere with the weaning but it's frustrating that its the only way I can get her back to sleep.

Oh wow. I guess I have some work to do. My MIL always talks about DH used a paci until 3, and that's just crazy to me. I think DD must be more dependent on hers than most. This is not going to be fun.

We already got rid of the pacifier.  He pretty much used it for sleep and sometimes in the car.  When he had a cold a few weeks ago, he couldn't breathe through his nose, so he couldn't use the pacifier.  We just put them away while he was sick and didn't bring them back out when he was better.  I don't even think he notices they are gone.  It takes him a little longer to fall asleep now, but he's figuring it out and it is getting better and better.

There's no way I'm taking it away before I wean her. She's boobie crazy and I need a step down.
We mainly just use it for naps or cranky times. Daycare doesn't let the babies have paci's when they're playing so they don't get 'exchanged" so that helps us. I'll take it away completely by 18 months or so.

Eh, it's not really anything that stresses me out. We started limiting DD's paci usage to bedtime and naptime only a little before 18 months, but we didn't completely make her ditch it until she was 2.5. Our pedi and our dentist both said it was no big deal, and to just aim for sometime before age 3. I imagine I'll follow the same route with DS, but if he seems to naturally want to wean from the paci sooner, that's great.

I'm a SAHM now but was a pediatric dental assistant. As long as they are off the paci by the time they are 3 years old is fine.  My son uses his still and I have no rush to wean him off of it. A lot of ped doctors are misinformed when it comes to the dental world I've noticed.
