Terrible Workout

OK, just a little background first.  Pre-pregnancy, I ran 3-4 days a week, about 5-6 miles a go.  I also used to play soccer three times a week and I swam a couple days a week as well.  So I would say, I was on the fit side.

Obviously, I have scaled back since the BFP.  I quit soccer completely (which is devastating for me), and I have been trying to "listen to my body" as far as swimming and running are concerned.  This listening to my body bit is really hard for me though- I swear I have been programmed to just power through the pain.

So today I went for a "run" and it was AWFUL!  I barely made it a mile and I spent most of the time walking, or just pausing all together.

So my question is this:  Is it time to hang up the running shoes?  Or was this just a bad day? I am trying very hard to not overdo it, but I don't want to quit when it may be ok to run a little longer in to this pregnancy. Thoughts?

No!  Don't stop!  I'm a prenatal exercise specialist and I struggle with the same thing.  Last pregnancy I worked out about 5 days a week and literally one day to the next felt completely different.

Depending on what your body is going through at the moment, what you ate for breakfast, how much sleep you got, how warm the place is, how much water you drank, you will have more or less energy.

I know it's hard, but be easy on yourself, and if your body just wants to walk a mile, just walk a mile.  Walking a mile is better than doing nothing.  On days when you feel up to running, run.  If you need to run-walk, do that. (It's kind of like how some days you feel like eating more and some days you feel like eating less.  You don't force yourself to eat more on days you aren't that hungry, you just eat less that day.

Try to eat a complex carb + protein (whole grain crackers w/peanut butter, yogurt and fruit) within the hour b4 you workout and make sure you drink plenty of water.  Sometimes dehydration can make a workout harder.

Good luck, and hang in there!

Don't stop, you'll be so glad you stuck with it when you feel great later, just take it a little easier while you work back into it.

Please forgive my typos! I'm not as dumb as my iphone would like you to believe :)

Oh my goodness, thank you so much!!!  I was seriously on the verge of tears because I thought my running days were over.  I just really needed to hear that this was normal and that I just need to take it day by day.  Thanks again!

I'm totally with you here. I ran quite frequently too before, but stopped completely during the first tri because I couldn't do it. I have started up again, slowly of course, and it seriously bums me out. I also feel programmed to work through the pain. I run, I've done a few rounds of Insanity. I like feeling like I'm getting the crap kicked out of me apparently. Ha. So, now my running is running a half to 3/4's of a mile, then walking a quarter, then running, then walking. It sucks because I miss just going and knocking 4 miles out without thinking about it, but at least I'm still doing something!

I think it was just a bad day and you might feel better next time. I'm a big runner too and I'm planning on keeping up until I can't. Good luck next time :

Thanks for posting this because I have been feeling the same way! Remember that incredible woman who ran a marathon and gave birth all in the same day? I wanted to be her and power through but now that I'm here, I can barely muster 2 miles at run/walk intervals. I feel so pathetic. But there are a lot of pregs out there who don't do anything at all so that gives me a little confidence boost.

Glad there are other runners out there who feel the same. Oh, and I'm slow as molasses now too. So sad. :

I have good days and bad days. I read on here somewhere a lady said, "Did you just know when it was your last run during pregnancy?" Everyone said no, sometimes it's just a bad day. Don't give up. That's what I've done and it works! Some days suck, I walked 3 miles the other day(and I NEVER walk). Today, however, I ran an excellent 4 miles. Now it's not the same as the 5-7 I'd do before, but 4 miles is good for a pregger lady! You are ALWAYS lapping the people on the couch just by moving.

Dude, I can't even run a mile not pregnant. Don't be too hard on yourself, and listen to your body.

Don't quit! I'm a runner too so I totally understand. I've really cut back, but only because the first time I started running again, I spotted quite a bit for about a week. My doctor wasn't too concerned but did tell me to take it easy for a week and ease into it. I've been running about 3 miles a day, 5 times a day, and I power walk half of it. Even before I was pregnant I would have "off" days where I just sucked wind, hard. I would only cut back if your body is telling you to. Everyone has those days, so don't feel bad!

I also really recommend swimming. If the weather is crappy or I just don't feel like getting cold, I swim laps for an hour or so at the JCC. Great for endurance. Good luck and stick with it. You'll be so happy you did.
