Decongestant and supply

I think I'm going to buckle and get a decongestant for my runny/stuffy nose, but I'm worried about my supply.  I've been EBFing for over four months and I'm hoping it doesn't take a bad hit.  For anyone who has BF and used a decongestant, did your supply come back up after you quit taking it or did you even notice a change in your supply?  I'm pretty miserable and I don't want this to turn into sinusitis or bronchitis because of not taking care of it early enough.

ETA: I've been using a neti pot, but that's not really helping too much, so that's why I'm leaning toward a decongestant for my congestion/runny nose combo.

I never had a problem with supply from taking any medication. I would say try it, and If you notice a difference, stop taking it and work on rebuilding your supply.

I caved and took a decongestant this past fall when I had bronchitis (among other things, yuck). My supply went down for a few days, but I think it had more to do with me not eating and drinking as much as I should have rather than the medication.

Afrin works great for stuffy nose.  Makes it feel like you aren't even sick.

A spray (afrin, dristan, otrivin) is better than a pill for bfing. Works better for me, anyway. Love that stuff.

Would Afrin help clear up my fogginess? I think it is caused from the congestion, but I am not sure. I feel very floaty.

You're probably exhausted and need a nap to clear up the "fogginess".

You might want to try a non-drowsy antihistamine for your nose before trying a decongestant.  It wouldn't affect your supply.

That's a good idea, but I'm afraid I have a cold that needs to be nipped in the bud.

An antihistamine will help dry up your congestion and is probably a safer bet in terms of your supply. All a decongestant is going to do is manage your symptoms, the cold has to run it's course (unless you need antibiotics). I'd take an antihistamine and some ibuprofen first and see if they alleviate some of the fogginess. I can't stand to take decongestants because I'm very sensitive to them, so I usually take Benedryl & Ibuprofen at night or lay down for a nap. Good luck!

A decongestant won't 'nip a cold in the bud'.

The only thing most cold medicines do is relieve symptoms. They do not shorten the duration of the cold.  Mucinex is the only cold med that can reduce the incidence of bronchitis by helping the mucus get out - and is perfectly safe to take while BFing without hurting your supply (just don't take Mucinex-D).

Did u know fenugreek helps with congestion? I saw it on kellymom.com.
Im dealing with a cold myself and sore throat. The fenugreek helps with the stuffiness and gives me an added boost well having to take medicine.
if you feel plugged up I second taking the mucinex. Mine is mainly a sore throat from hell! I may have to gargle salt water. Yucky!
Good luck.

Yes it will come back up. I have taken stuff two or three times and each time i notice a drastic drop in pumping output, but it comes back up in like a day. If you supplement remember to pump to stimulate production. Getting sick can also impact supply and taking care of a baby while sick is HARD. Take some medicine and take care of yourself!!
