Food and eating

I'm sorry to ask again. I know we have been over this before!

How much is your baby eating and drinking a day? If formula what brand? How much does your LO weigh? And because I am on my phone is your LO a boy or girl?

I'm having some feeding issues if you can't tell...

Audra (girl, obviously lol) eats 3 meals a day plus snacks. I don't know how many ounces because it's table food, not purees. She drinks about 18-20oz a day of Similac Sensitive formula. At 9 months she was 16 pounds, 2 ounces so she's maybe 17 pounds, if that, now at 10 months & 3 weeks old.

DD eats about 16-18 oz of formula.  She eats 2-3 "meals" a day with a snack.

But she seems to be showing some independence (and by that I mean refusing to eat/drink when I offer it).  Many morning she will wake up and only drink 1-2 ounces.  I'll offer her yogurt (or cottage cheese, banana, etc.) and she'll take a bite or two and that is it.  Other days she will eat half a cup and want more, plus take a 5 oz bottle.  Sometimes she'll go for like ten hours without drinking more than an ounce or two of formula.

However, she generally will get at least 14 oz of formula (and sometimes up to 22), plus food.  A "typical" meal would be 1/2 of a grilled chicken & cheese sandwich (ends up with half of that on the floor, half in her mouth) and some fruit.  Or 1/2 an avocado or other veggie with 1/4 cup chicken.  Breakfast is usually 1/2 banana, yogurt, and cheerios.  She would graze on Cheerios all day if I let her.

My doctor said not to let her get below 16 oz of formula/day.  Most days this isn't an issue, but every once in awhile she just won't drink.

She gets Costco formula and was 20.3 lbs at 9 month appointment.

Aria is taking 18-24oz of formula a day. 3 to 4 six ounce bottles. We use the Parent's Choice (Walmart brand) version of Similac Advance. She usually takes 18, but if she didn't eat many solids that day (it varies day to day whether she wants to eat them or play with them) she'll drink an extra bottle.

She has 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. She generally eats what we're eating.  Snacks consist of cheerios/puffs/yogurt melts, cheese crumbles, fruit or veggies.

Right now, I totally suck at making sure her meals are balanced. Mostly because I suck at balancing our meals. It's something I have really got to get my act together on before she's totally on solids. Embarrassed

Eta: At her well-baby checkup last week, Aria was 18lbs, 13 oz, 29 inches (50th% for weight, 75th% for height)

DD was 27 3/4" and 17 lbs 13 oz two weeks ago, 40% for weight and 12% for height.

Some days she eats like a trucker, other days she will barely nibble. Yesterday was a trucker day, which seems to be more the norm. Breakfast is usually 4 oz of yogurt + puree mixed together, along with a handful of cheerios. Lunch is usually dinner leftovers. Snack is cheese or goldfish or more cheerios. Dinner is what we're eating - or frozen leftovers, if we're eating late.

She also takes in 18+ oz of breastmilk a day, pumped.

DS weighs 28 pounds, so he is a little bit on the larger side.  Okay he is huge Big Smile, he is off the charts for height and weight.   I'll give you a typical day's schedule:

Wake up around 7:30: granola bar, yogurt, fruit and a sippy of milk

10:00 cheese cut up, vegetable baby food (small jar)

10:30- nap

1:00 wakes up and has a PB&J sandwich or something of the sort and fruit with a sippy of milk

3:00  more fruit or vegetable baby food and cheese

6:00  meat, milk, and some type of side dish like vegetables or pasta.

7:30 bedtime with 4-8 oz bottle depending on how much he drinks before falling asleep.

So he drinks 4-8 ounces of Good Start formula per day.  He drinks about 8-12 ounces of milk and probably another 8 or so ounces of water or watered down apple juice.

What type of feeding issues are you having?  Are you having more trouble getting him to drink formula or eat table food?  I believe I recall some of your posts, so I know your DS was having trouble gaining weight, but I can't remember what you have shared as far as eating issues.

DS weighs almost 22 lbs.

He breast feeds 5 times a day and eats 3 meals of solids plus 1 snack a day.

We also offer him a sippy cup of water with his meals.

He isn't ready for table food so we are still doing purees. I can't get him to eat food or drink formula. We are getting about 4oz of food and 20oz of formula a day. The only reason I can even get that much is because we do 1 to 2 night feeds everyday and I will spend an hour trying to get him to finish a bottle. Its so trying.

The girls drink 18-24oz of WCM/day.  They eat a lot of solids - if I had to guess a number of ounces I would say 18-24 ounces of solids/day, but we've also been moving off of purees and onto real foods.  Saturday for breakfast they split a scrambled egg and a packet of oatmeal, lunch is usually still purees (about 12-14 ounces between the two of them) and dinner was some browned ground beef, sweet potato fries and some cheese (dinner for my brother's birthday was burgers and fries).  They have snacks in between like Cheerios, goldfish, and yogurt.

Try not to get too hung up on comparing, though.  If Grant is developmentally behind and is having trouble swallowing it could be perfectly normal for him to be at a completely different place where a lot of the babies on here are.  As long as his doctors are comfortable with what/how much he's eating or given you suggestions for how to improve you're good.  I know it's tough not to compare - I'm completely jealous that some babies on here are walking and mine are two of the oldest and not walking yet! - but it can make you more worried then you need to be.

I'm sure you have tried everything at this point, so forgive me if you have already tried these suggestions.

Can you try to make him some type of smoothie to drink out of the bottle and use a higher flow nipple so it can come out easier?  I just saw these yogurt smoothies at the food store that seem to be pretty liquified.  Could you give him something like that to drink out of a bottle?  Have you tried the baby food pouches that they suck on/you squeeze?  Is the problem that he gets tired drinking the bottle or he just isn't interested? I know you mentioned before that he has low muscle tone, so I wasn't sure if him taking that long to eat was him being physically tired or just bored.

What about something like this?  It is packed with protein and calories.

 http://voices.yahoo.com/how-nutritious-high-calorie-shake-your-1640439.html?cat=51

If you blend it to the right consistency I bet you could even spoon feed it to him versus making him work to get it out of the bottle.

Again, I know you have been working with OT/PT/ST and I am no expert, but thought I might offer a few blind suggestions.

I agree with all of this too.  DS is not waving, clapping, walking and barely says any words.  When you see all the other peoples kids who are doing things you start to feel like your kid is behind.  DS is almost a month older than some of the kids on this board and he is definitely not up to speed with everybody else yet!  I would take your doctors advice more than anything.

A boy.
2 meals a day, working on 3. Breakfast and Dinner are purees and finger foods.
12 snacks snacks are usually just finger foods.
Water periodically through out the day, with meals and snacks
Weighs 19 to 20 pounds.
Nurses about 3 to 4 times a day, and about 4 times at night.
Grant will get there in time. Just be patient and keep trying. As long as he is eating something that is good.

The developmental pedi wants him to get 32 to 34 oz a day. I talked with him and got him down to 28oz a day or 25oz with 6oz of purees. We are not getting there no matter what I do.

I got my pedi to prescribe zantac, but it is not helping. Swallow study showed penetration of food but no aspiration.

I'm worried a feeding tube is in our future.

I'm sure you've done this already, but have you tried different bottles or maybe a sippy cup?  Do you think it's a reflux issue?  My nephew tried Zantac first but ended up on Prevacid (I think, maybe something else, but definitely a step up from Zantac).

Ethan is a boy. He weighs about 17-18lbs so he's on the smaller side.

Right now he's nursing 2x per day and getting 2 or 3 5oz bottles of frozen milk/formula. I'd say about 10oz + whatever he nurses.

We're not totally consistent with his solids. Some days he gets 3 meals, sometimes only 1 or 2. He's a good eater though and will eat just about anything we give him even though he doesn't have any teeth.

ETA: Forgot to put what kind of formula he gets. He's on Similac Advance.

I don't know your story but we are in the midst of dealing with tongue tie issues that are causing us so much difficulty with eating and nursing. Have you looked into this? None of the several pediatricians we saw caught it and neither did the GI doctor, they were happy to put him on reflux meds when the real issue was the tongue. Did you nurse at all in the beginning? If so, any pain or other symptoms?

I nursed for 6 months with a nipple shield and EP until he was 8 months. I was told he has a weak suck, but I doubt it is his tongue because he is capable of taking a bottle well on occasion.

My DS has a weak disorganized suck. Have you tried sweeping your finger under his tongue to see if you feel a speedbump? It should feel smooth. Honestly, when I hear moms struggling and especially when some of the symptoms sound familiar to our situation, I have to bring this up. It's worth looking into if anything just to make sure it's not an issue.

Elijah is 11 months old, he weighs 26 1/2 lbs and is 30 inches. He still takes between 56 bottles that are all 7 oz and we use the target brand formula. He also eats 3 times a day, whatever we eat he gets a portion of, for instance this morning I made bacon and egg tacos so I gave him some scrambled ests with bacon pieces in it and for lunch I made a sandwich for myself so I made him a grilled cheese. He will also snack on his puffs and the baby rice crisps.

Have you tried the purees they can suck out of?  We have a hard time feeding Paige any purees by spoon, but she loves eating those by herself.

LO - a girl - eats 3 meals a day, about a total of 10 ounces of food total I'd guess, and takes18 ounces of BM at day care, plus nurses at least 3 times a day.  At 9 months she weighed 18 lbs, 11 ounces.  I'm guessing about 20 now...

DD eats 3 meals a day plus snacks in between. She eats whatever we eat, so not really sure what she eats in oz., but some of her meals are enough to be considered a small adult meal. She drinks about 15-20 oz of cow's milk a day, with water in between, and breast feeds in the morning and before bed. At her 9 month appointment DD was 20lbs9oz. She's tall and very very active though, so she eats a lot.
