What triggers your heartburn?

I had the worst heartburn last night. It kept me up most of the night because I felt like I was going to throw up if I moved. Finally around 4am I took 4 maximum strength Tums and that helped. I can't figure out what, if anything sparked it.

If anything, I find that having an empty stomach triggers it. I try to snack often to keep something in my stomach. Sometimes, it doesn't matter though, and I get heartburn anyway. Zantac usually helps. Tums help, too, but only for a little while.

Tomato based sauces. I have had to cut pizza and lasagna out of my diet because I have TERRIBLE heartburn when I eat them. Once I start feeling a little bit of burning I go ahead and pop two tums just to stop it before it gets bad. For a while there I was taking preventative tums before bedtime because I have having heartburn almost every night. Other than the tomato sauces I haven't figured out what else triggers my heartburn so I just try to catch it early and luckily tums is strong enough for me to help. Good luck figuring your triggers out!!

Pretty much anything can bring on heartburn for me, especially tomato based foods.  My doctor said to never let my stomach get empty so the stomach acid has something to interact with.  Also, laying down generally makes it worse.  Finally, at least for me, when I do throw up due to heartburn/acid reflux, I generally feel better immediately.  If I throw up it generally means I let it linger too long before taking something.  I take Zantac 150 once/day and use Tums if I need something besides the Zantac at some point.

anything and everything triggers mine. It is horrible. I can eat oatmeal or turkey on white bread and get heartburn.  I just don't get it.  Tums helps and is good for calcium.

In short? Everything. Including things that are supposed to help fight heartburn (oatmeal, white bread, water). Actually, water is one of the worst. Thankfully my OB gave me a prescription so I can drink again. Water, I'm talking, not alcohol. And I can sleep without being propped up to about a 45° angle.

This.  Even water triggers it and horrible acid reflux.

Iron pills and an empty stomach. I eat tons of spicy food - it never gives me heartburn.

Absolutely nothing seems to trigger mine. I'm used to horrible heartburn and reflux because of my ulcers, but that I can control with diet, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Breathing.., basically everything. My doc gave me a rinse to gargle with that has seemed to help a bit. I use a lot of hard candy too to help, otherwise if vomit after everything.

Water and chocolate trigger my more severe moments. But like PP's stated, it's unpredictable and basically anything can cause it. I would focus on avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and acidic foods, and prop yourself up for at least 30 minutes fater eating. Other than that, we're all just kinda screwed :)

Tomato sauces, fruit, juice, pop, and water are the worst culprits for me.  Laying down is actually the worst thing.  Zantac is my friend.

Anything and everything. Sometimes  nothing. I take a prescription strength med for it. I ate a whole bottle of tums in a very short time. It was time to stop suffering.

Everything these days! The worst offenders though include: eating too late,  chocolate anything, and eating too big of a meal for dinner even if early enough. I try to limit any evening snacks now to ice pops, milk/almond milk, and water. I've had crackers and been ok, but it's still riskier for me. It's been worse lately too. I can't wait for this to go away!

Similar to other posts...

Just laying down  seems to be my worst trigger.  This only started during my 8th month.  Today I woke up at 8am with horrible heartburn even though I had not eaten in 10 hours.  It got better as woke up and was upright.

The worst I've had was after a meal with red sauce.  I was up all night, trying to sleep sitting up and was gagging.  I won't eat red sauce again until after I deliver.

Sadly - I'm starting to think chocolate might a culprit too - sigh.

But it's so bad now - that anything I eat will trigger it somewhat - but the above make it much worse.

Zantac helps.   I think it's better than popping too many tums a day.

Everything. Eating. Not eating. Drinking water. Drinking pretty much anything... It comes on randomly, usually a couple hours after I eat or drink. I usually take a maximum strength Zantac when it comes on.

I was going to say breathing, but I think this is a bit more in detail. Minus the perscription. I've pop Tums like candy anymore and I've never had heartburn until I got pregnant. I've been blessed because this sucks!
