S/o baby led weaning

Give me the down side of baby led weaning.  Has anyone tried and stopped? Anyone had bad experiences?  What are the most annoying things about it - extra time & extra mess??

I need to hear the down side to make decisions....it's just how I roll. I just started another thread so people don't feel like they are raining on the BLW parade....

For us, the downside was my husbands utter fear of her choking even though gagging is normal with blw and it isn't really much of a risk, the panic in his face when she so much as coughs with a larger bite of food is enough for me to do purees for now. It's an issue w my DH, not w blw. I think at first blw kids tend to eat less but that's ok most nutrition should he from breastmilk or formula until age 1 anyway, and they might end up better eaters but who really knows.

Eta: as pointed out in post below, I know the gagging is normal and not actually a problem...but for now my DH can't accept that and freaks out.

I haven't done BLW yet but I'm strongly considering it.  I think the only downside I see so far is the mess.  Obviously if your LO is eating with their hands and feeding themselves they will make much more of a mess then if you are spoon feeding them.  So I think I'm going to do a combo of Purees when we are out and BLW when we are home or at a family members and them being messy isn't really a concern.

I guess for me I really don't see the point. We're not doing cereal just went straight to pures. We did pures with DD and she isn't picky in the least and she never had a texture problem either. I do make my own food so I'm not sure if that makes a differnece. So I guess I'm just not sure what the benefits are.

I think the point is you don't have to make baby foods...you can just give them pieces of what you are eating. Sounds easier to me. But I can't get DH on board. (We have to give her a bath after feeding most purees anyway - that's what happens when baby wants to help with the spoon).

It's also supposed to help with hand & eye coordination.  Plus it helps your LO learn what size pieces are good for them and how to move food around their mouth etc.  Here's a link that breaks down alot of the benefits of it!

Downside:  Social minority:  My pedi didn't approve.  My MIL secretly spoon fed her.  My cousin who's a nurse was really nervous when we went to a restaurant.  Learning opportunities:  DH let LO grab a potato chip (10 mos or so) that was scary - silent gagging for a few seconds.

My DH got on board after reading the chapter about the biology of choking in the BLW book.  Then he was (mostly) great about it!  He would definitely say BLW downside is inconvenience: he (still at 16 mos) prefers spoon-feeding to save time and mess.  Apparently I have time and/or patience.

Do you still follow the 4 day rule in between offering new foods? My concern would be allergies/reactions to what I'm eating if I just had them something off my plate.
As for coordination, we did with DD, and will with DS, offer small bite size things like puffs that will dissolve. We just didn't start that way.
I'm not against BLW; it just seems trendy to me and I guess since we did pures with DD and she's a great eater, we'll repeat with DS. It is an interesting concept.

You do not have to follow the 4 day "rule" if you're comfortable. The only food allergy in our family is shellfish so we are not waiting. Our boys have tried peaches, cucumber, avocado, prunes, and bananas in the past week with no reactions.

I haven't done BLW, but I'll give it a try. I hadn't heard of it when DS was little, but it seems like the most natural way to introduce solids. We'll mix it up if we need to. I don't think you need to be all in. Do what works for you and what feels right.

We did a combo - the mess... well he gets just as messy w/ purees as w/ BLW so we didn't gain/lose anything there. Our big downside was that once he figured out things he really liked, he'd try to shove HUGE portoins into his mouth... he's a little piggy so we had to go to diced foods pretty quickly.  Also my DH was a big sally about the gagging and would ruin dinners ranting about him choking. He's lucky I didn't shove a chicken bone down his throat. So for my own sanity I let him do purees sometimes. He did fine w/ both... BLW can be about convenience and sometimes its jsut more convenient to open up a jar of puree!

DHs panicing is probably why BLWing is not going to happen without oatmeal and purees first in our house. He still panics when em coughs on water at night. Sigh MEN!

There are three cons I can think of:

1. The side eyes from other people who were raised with a strict cereal, then pures, then food mentality. I remember my mom had a bunch of older ladies over for a lunch date. I went and brought DD. the whole time they started at C saying "she'll choke!" She never did. So you need confidence to shoot people like that down.

2. The mess. I did use pures sometimes. Mostly for reason number 3, below. With pures I could control the mess a lot easier. So if she was wearing a pretty outfit or something, I'd rather have her eat pures.

3. It is sometimes harder to find something they can eat. Like if we go to a steakhouse, she couldn't exactly eat what I eat. Or if what I order at a restaurant is super spicy, I didn't want to give that to her. So for those occasion,s, I did bring pures in the diaper bag to feed her with.
