Is this teething?

DS is 4 months and all day today every time we nurse, he will latch and start nursing, and tug and pull away at the same time.  He pops on and off and will fuss when he pops off.  I know my milk supply is fine because 1. I pump while I am at work and 2. when he pops off he gets sprayed in the face.  I know he is slightly young for teething but this is the only thing I can think that it could be.  His gums do look slightly swollen, and he is drolling like crazy and putting his hands and/or everything he can get his hand on in his mouth (but he has been drolling and eating his hands for a few weeks now)

Is there anything I can do to stop him from tugging at my nipple?  Its killing me!

TIA!

i remember my lo doing the tugging thing a lot around 3 months or so, and i think it has to do with oversupply, especially when you are saying he gets sprayed in the face and also the fussing when coming off. you may have fast letdown, like i did. try hand expressing into a towel when he does that, for a few minutes, then latch him back on and see if it helps.

he may also be teething along with that!

I think I have always had a forceful let down but DS has adjusted to it.  He usually is a very happy baby.  He isn't very gassy and he rarely spits up, unless I can't get him to burp after eating.  So I never thought it was much of an issue.  While at work, I do pump more than he needs, but its not much more, maybe one or two ounces.

perhaps he is going through a growth spurt and trying to up your supply? i hate to say it but my brain is foggy of the first few months with lo lol i remember her doing this but i dont remember exactly why! i know it was really frustrating and semi irritating though- but it DOES pass!

also, my oversupply didnt bother my lo until around 4/5 months, i know that for a fact, because we saw our lactation consult at her 4 month appt and she showed me the hand express trick. just a thought!

or maybe its just teeth!!!

teething never effected our nursing but she did have all those other signs when she was about to cut teeth, and with every baby being different that may be it.

huh....that is interesting that she wasn't bothered by a too fast let down until then....maybe thats it then?  I guess we will see in a few days...if he gets teeth I guess it was teething....lets just hope he doesn't take off my nipple in the mean time! LOL

 Thanks!

The drooling and everything in the mouth is much more related to being 4 months old than it is to teething.

You've entered the 4 month wakeful!  Congratulations!  You are officially part of the club. Wink

The wakeful period applies to more than just sleep patterns, it involves their sudden awareness of the world around them.  Part of that exploring is putting everything in their mouth (hands, toys, parts of your body...).  It also involves them being more aware of what's going on when they feed.  Latching and unlatching during this time period is fairly common, because 1) they're distracted by anything and everything and 2) they're starting to become more fussy/picky as they realize that things aren't happening the way they want it too.  Which means before he might not have noticed the forceful letdown as much and now he's more like "Moo--oo--om, knock it off!"  This also comes into play when the milk isn't coming out fast enough.  Or at the wrong angle.  Or not to the rhythm of the song in his head....

I love the way you describe the 4 month wakeful! We are going through it now. I blew my nose yesterday while nursing her and she popped off and glared at me for two seconds.

DS turned 12 weeks on Sunday and we've kind of been dealing with the same thing for the past few days.  I attribute it to the 12 week growth spurt.  He has been nursing like crazy, sometimes on and off for a whole hour when he usually nurses for 5-10 minutes and then is done for 2 hours.  He latches and unlatches the whole time and is pretty fussy while he nurses.  He's been pretty fussy in general, also.  This morning he was awake and screaming from 5-7 which frustrated me because he's normally so easy to soothe.  I also started my first PP period on Christmas Eve so I wonder if my supply may have taken a little dip-which is not good timing since he needs more to eat during a growth spurt.
