getting baby to sleep in bassinet...

So, my LO is a little over a week old and has been a pretty good baby so far.

However, we haven't been able to get him to sleep in his bassinet for anything! He will fall asleep in our arms and 9 times out of 10 when we put him down in the bassinet, he wakes up. We've also tried putting him in there when he seems a little sleepy, but he starts to cry.

Are we doomed to have a baby that won't sleep anywhere but in our arms? Or is this a normal newborn thing? Any tips for making it easier for him when we lay him down?

TIA :]

Put him down awake! Really!

Here's my recommendation, regarding "putting down awake". This was a post I wrote a couple days ago:

Disclaimer: Do what works for you, this is what we do.

We keep an eye on the clock and keep DD2 up for only a certain amount of awake time (which at that age of 10 days old is basically enough time to diaper and feed her). See below for guideline by age. We put her down awake, to fall asleep on her own. No crying necessary. By not letting her get overtired, she is able to fall asleep on her own. Also, by putting DD2 down in her space awake, she does not wake up in a different place than she fell asleep (i.e. she doesnt fall asleep in my arms, then wake in her crib and be scared).

We also swaddle using the escape proof swaddle. I personally swaddle till about 5-6 months old. We thought DD1 hated swaddling, so we stopped at 2 weeks old. Then we found this method at 10 weeks and she fell asleep for 7 hrs that night. It works great for us: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K4VdZxwsu4

We also have a fan for white noise and a fisher price aquarium for music/lights to distract her. And, if necessary, a pacifier. I highly recommend a crib attachment thing, like the aquarium, not a mobile. A mobile needs to be constantly wound up whereas the aquarium plays for 18 minutes and has a wireless remote that can turn it on from the doorway.

Guideline for Awake time for babies
0-4 weeks: 30-45 minutes
4-6 weeks: 40-60 minutes
6-8 weeks: 40-70 minutes
8-12 weeks: 50-80 minutes
3-4 months: 60-90 minutes
4-5 months: 1 hr to 1.5 hrs
5-6 months: 1.5 hours
6-9 months: 2 hours, give or take 15 minutes

We have been dealing with cluster feedings over the past 2 days. basically same thing would happen: feed baby, baby falls asleep, lay him down and like magic he is awake again (wanting to feed). Now i just make sure he is really full then lay him down.  Got 4.5hrs out of him last night :)  Good luck and remember it's not forever!

Merry Christmas!

It might just be too much space. My lo wouldn't sleep in her bassinet either, but the bouncy she likes. It's more comforting bc it surrounds her and she isn't just in open space. Try a RnP or bouncy seat.

This.  The RnP with a swaddle was a lifesaver for us.  At 2 months we started doing naps swaddled in the crib & hope to transition to night sleep in the crib by 4 months.

My son hated the bassinet too and never slept in it. Some babies are just like that.

DS hated sleeping flat in the bassinet so we got the Rock n play sleeper and it was amazing the difference! It was a lifesaver and all we use now with DD and have had no sleep issues.

We actually got a RnP for Christmas from a family friend and it's helped a TON! Also, white noise and a pacifer has worked to help keep him asleep and/or happy whenever we lay him down.

 Thanks :)
