Weaning trouble

My son has been BF since day one. He was nursed on demand until I returned to work when he was 8 months. My son has had a very difficult time weaning. If I'm not home he takes a sippy with rice milk fine (allergies). If I'm home he wants to nurse. I've done distraction and offering sippy avoiding our nursing spots and having dad help. He signs for it, whines and cries for it and will throw tantrums. I am not interested in BF past a year and he still wakes 4-5 times a night and will scream until he is nursed. Ferber worked great for bedtime but not wakings. I am glad I was able to go a year and truly don't know the right way to wean a baby who doesn't want to. It sounds cruel and I know many might flame but I am proud to have reached a year and want to stop without torturing him. Anyone have experience? Some people seem to have such an easy weaning experience but mine has been tough. He often doesn't nurse between 6am and 4pm but that's a struggle but doable. I find it very hard when he's crying. The don't offer don't refuse makes me think he will continue as long as I let him. TIA

I had to let my son have a bottle for bed to wean from the breast BUT now we have to wean from that and it hasn't been easy he's two and still gets it because with 2u2 I'm too tired to fight by bed time.
