STMhow much wash and lotion

I'm updating my registry, and my sister says I have way to much baby wash and lotion on my list. So I was wondering how much baby wash and lotion did you go through? I currently have 3 bottles of baby wash and 2 bottles of lotion. I have a couple of sets and individual bottles still listed on my registry. Am I over estimating how much baby will need?

And while I'm thinking about it, how much butt cream and how many bibs are necessary?

I wouldn't worry about buying too much wash and lotion. You never know what your baby will be allergic to (and its a silly thing to try and return) and you're really not supposed to use lotion on them for the first few months unless they have a dry skin issue like eczema.

Call me a hippy, but I've always been told the less lotion you put on them, the more their skin can learn to make its own healthy oils. Along the same vein, newborns and infants don't really get dirty, so you don't need to bathe them daily (unless they're covered in poop/vomit/etc). :-)

Now, butt cream you can't have enough of. lol Tube for the changing table, one for the diaper bag, one extra.... you get it. Wink We really like Boudreaux's Butt Paste for normal diaper rash issues and a tube of Triple Paste on hand when we need to break out the big guns. That stuff will cure ANYTHING their butt can muster.

I swear we used two bottles in a year. You really don't need much - they are tiny. Lotion we went through a lot more, but we steal it for ourselves and the whole family has eczema. Butt cream you can't have enough of! Bibs you don't need until they start solids, but they get nasty and you toss them. I'd get maybe five and use a few until they die. You'll need bigger sizes of them eventually anyhow.

I bathe my kids every night. Newborn don't need to have a bath every night but I do anyway. They get lotion after bath time and in the morning. I get lots of compliments on how soft their skin is. The dr even asked what I use, lol. As for butt cream, I still have the tube from my son (he's 2.5 now).  It depends on the child, some get rashes easier than others. I personally like desitin maximum strength. For bottles I have 5. She gets 4 6oz a day plus 1 to stay in the diaper bag.

I didn't register for any baby wash or lotion (or shampoo) and got tons at my shower - and one bottle of each would have been plenty! One bottle of wash lasted forever, one big bottle of shampoo was only like halfway gone when he was almost a year old, and we never needed any lotion.  I would probably not even register for it and then if by chance you don't get any, pick up one bottle of each before LO comes.

I would get 1 or 2 things of cream.  We used a LOT of bibs but there were a lot of kinds we didn't end up liking, so maybe don't go too overboard until you know what you like.

I didn't do a lot of baths the first year - there was no need. I don't think I used more than one bottle or tube of anything.

I had one pack of cloth bibs when we started solids, so I guess a dozen of those, but I didn't need that many. Once DS was eating finger foods, I had 2-3 plastic bummis bibs and that was plenty.

I didn't register for any lotion, and I got a ton, I still haven't bought any for DD. Same thing with butt cream, I think DD has had diaper rash maybe 5 times, and it was never really bad.

I didn't reg for any and still got 2 or 3 bottles of wash and a bottle of lotion. It's nice to have so we don't have to buy it but I think it tends to be one of those things that at least someone will pick up for you.

Don't forget to add some items for you like breast milk storage bags, tender nipple cream and breast pads, if you plan to BF that is. I had those items on my registry and got all of them and I'm so glad I did. They will be very useful the first few months.

As for bibs, I had two different sets on my registry and didn't get either of them but yet still got a good stock of bibs.

It's not like the wash and lotion go bad. However, you might decide you want certain brands. I didn't do a ton of research on them until after DS was born. Had I known better i would have stayed away from J and J products. We now use burts bees wash only. We are picky on lotion because he has eczema and use eucerin only.

Same with diaper cream. People have different preferences and some work better for some kids.

As for bibs, also hard to know what you'll like. Some like the wipe off ones. We preferred the cloth ones we could just put in the washing macine. We didn't use the wipe off kind until DS was eating solids. We had a TON of the cloth ones because he had reflux.

So my advice is to register for it but keep the tags on everything.

Just to echo PP's, I wouldn't buy much.  It took us a few tries to find something that didn't irritate his skin.  I would have been really annoyed if I had a stockpile of soap that I couldn't use.

As PP stated, you will likely get baby lotions and washes as gifts, so I went ahead and registered for the brand that I would like to try so that I at least might get a supply of what I'd like to use. But I registered for one small bottle of each, so maybe once it's fulfilled, it will deter others from buying more. Who knows...

My mom bought me a tiny bottle of Aquaphor, Butt Paste, Balmex, and A&D so that I can try and see what works best without wasting a bunch of money on the bigger containers.

We only used a small amount of wash on DD's hair every few days when she was a nb, but never on her body (unless, of course, there was a huge need for it). We still don't use wash on her body and we only wash her hair every other day. One bottle of Burt's Bees shampoo lasted us a year. We've never had to use lotion on her, probably because soap doesn't dry her out.

I never used lotion until he was over a year, not necessarily because they recommend not to use it on newborns, but just because I didn't need to-- his skin was perfect and any lotion would have been purely for cosmetic/"smell good" reasons. He did start to develop a little eczema, so I've used several bottles of Aveeno lotions on him over the last year or so, but nothing that I feel I need to stock up on. I just kind of use them as needed, and it's not everyday.

The baby wash, however, I don't think you can have too much of. I generally like the natural wash, but I also have used various Johnson types, and have really liked them all. You won't use too much for quite a while, but I feel like I buy at least a large bottle every month. (Especially now that DS wants to "wash his own body.")

ETA: In the way of bibs, we never had to deal with excessive drool, so the only time DS had a bib on was when he was eating solids. My best friend had gifted me a 10ish pack of Ikea bibs that were plain white but outlined in different colors. I absolutely LOVED them. They were big enough that they covered his shirt and they washed really well. The velcro always seemed to stay fresh and the terry cloth never felt super worn. I did have others, like Carter's and what not, and I didn't like them as much. The velcro really wore down, and even though I washed per instructions and the same as the Ikea bibs, I felt like they shrunk and they weren't really big enough to begin with.

We have used probably 2-3 bottles of soap in 14 months. I have yet to finish a bottle of lotion. DD usually gets baths 3-4 nights a week at our house and I put lotion on here once or twice a week. I'm also a terrible evicted, and gave away a fair amount of stuff we got at our baby shower. We have used possibly 2 tubes of butt paste, but we've been super lucky with DD's skin.

I think your fine. You probably wont get all of the stuff in your list anyways. My son is 2 and i still use tear free johnson and johnson stuff so i dont see what the problem is. If you have too much its not like the stuff expires. Idk i have a lot of variety on my registry cause i knew people probably wouldnt get exactly what i wanted and i only got one baby soap at my shower sooo i dint think it really matters. Lol

DS is 3, nearly 4, and we still often  use the baby soap on him since his skin is pretty sensitive.

If you feel like you have a lot of extra soap, once LO gets bigger, you can use it to make bath paint, too.  I have made paint with soap, corn starch, and food coloring for my DS to play with.  It's fun, cheap, and it doesn't stain him nor the tub.

DD was a messy BF from the start and I loved the tommee tippee bibs with the absorbant collar to prevent milk rash.

I never did lotion but I found that a bottle of baby wash usually lasts for quite a while- 6 months or so? You really shouldn't use very much at a time anyway.

But, it doesn't go bad so having too much isn't a bad thing.
