At what pt. is it NOT rude...

... to go out in public while sick?

The background of the question is that our great uncle was in the hospital at the end of last week with pneumonia, but has been given plenty of antibiotics and has been pronounced non contagious. My mom invited him for Xmas dinner we're his only family and my sister threw a fit, and is refusing to come. I can't travel home today is my EDD and it's 3 hrs from our hospital, but I wouldn't have questioned it. 24 hrs of antibiotics is the standard for our daycare and is what my dr has alwaus told us and once you're not contagious, I don't see a problem with going out as long as you're feeling ok. Am I way off base?

Honestly, most forms of pneumonia aren't contagious to begin with (rather, it's very very difficult for them to be communicable to other people), especially if you are otherwise young(er) and healthy. Also, if he was in the hospital, he likely received a round of antibiotics there, and therefore was "non contagious" (if he ever WAS contagious) before he even got discharged. But yes, to answer your question, if you are not contagious, there is nothing wrong with being out amongst the general populace.

If he's not contagious there is no reason to stay home alone on Christmas.

Pneumonia isn't usually contagious, and after 24-48 hours of antibiotics, your uncle probably isn't contagious anyways.   No reason to spend Christmas alone.

I agree with the pp--pneumonia is not contagious. Poor great uncle!
