ERGO Owners, come in!

Hey ladies, do any of you own an Ergo? I've heard that they are best for bigger babies, so I'm looking at getting one to carry my 14 month old who is 22 lbs, and then use with the new baby. I have a moby which we still use, but she is getting a little heavy for it. We also have a Baby Bjorn which we hate.

Here's my question: I didn't realize there were three styles. What do I want, the sport, performance or regular? I want to be able to front and back carry the toddler and carry the newborn, and we live in a HOT climate. DH and I are both tall, if that make a difference. Any input from you clever ladies? Looks like there isn't much of a price difference.

Hmm haven't heard much about the Beco, but it looks like it has good reviews on Amazon also. What type? What did you like better about it?

I think the one we have is the Butterfly. I liked that the baby could face towards you or facing out in the Beco.

I have an Ergo Sport and from what I hear it is best for taller people. I love it and have the infant insert for when DD and this LO are teeny. I still ise it for DD and she is 22lbs.

I do want a Beco Gemini bc baby can face out while front carrying but will only get it if someone gets it for me. I'm too cheap.

I still use the Ergo for DD in the back carry when I don't want to deal with a stroller. She likes it once she's up there. I hated it when I had to use the insert. It was a pita. I used the Moby until 6 months. Then we mostly used the Ergo. I have the sport and I am happy with it.

They have Ergo's on babysteals a lot, so I would hold off and see if that comes up at all before you pay full price. I'd love to try the Beco, but like PP, I think I am too cheap to buy another carrier when I'm satisfied with the Ergo.

I'm glad to hear this. The infant insert on the Ergo is going to be too hot for a July baby and I was leaning toward the Beco.

I have an ergo that a friend lent me and I really like it.  You can get the infant insert and use it with a 7lb baby.  I could be wrong, but I think the only Ergo that works as a back carrier is the performance.  The Ergo I have only goes in the front. I was thinking of buying my own Ergo with a cute pattern!

I used the Ergo with my son who has always been 98%+. I'm pretty sure I used it till he was close to 30 pounds (carrying him on my back, especially for walks and errands). I love that thing and will def buy an infant insert to use for baby number two. 

Im 5'9" and DH is 6'7" and the ergo worked great or us.

All Ergos should be able to do front, back, and hip carries.

I love ours. DD is 20-22 lbs, and I can still wear her on the front without feeling any of her weight. I took her to the mall recently in our stroller and spent the whole time wishing for the Ergo. I often call it the best piece of baby gear we bought. For warmer climates (and like PP said, taller people), the Sport is the best option. I tried it on while PG. The material was thinner and if I remember correctly, there seemed to be less material in general.

This particular model is actually the Beco Gemini, and it only holds up to 35 lbs if that's a deal breaker for you. The Ergo goes up to 45 lbs, but they can't face out.

OP, I manage a baby boutique and the Beco Gemini is our most popular carrier.

Hmm.. I didn't realize you couldn't face forward in the Ergo. That's currently her favorite position in the Moby. Maybe I'll have to order both and try them out

We have the original Ergo and have used it since DD was tiny [with a blanket rolled under her butt when she was really little instead of their infant insert]. We are still using it at 21 months and 25lbs so I think it's a winner for sure.

Even in the beco, only very short periods of time are recommended for facing out. It's just impossible for them to sit correctly that way. I love my ergo! Do you have a local store that carries them where you could go try them on to decide? That would help a lot!

I use an ergo when hanging out with my nephew and it was super comfy for me and him.  Now that I'm having my own I'm definitely getting an ergo and I'm considering making a mei tei--just because it's similar in design to the ergo, but it has ties instead of the buckles and snaps.

My sister used the moby when her son was was young and that worked until he was about four months when she switched to the ergo.  This time she's planning on using the ergo for her newborn and a towel--instead of shelling out extra money for an infant insert.  Not quite sure how she's going to use the towel, but I'm sure I'll get a detailed lesson in it!

Also careful with the front facing baby carriers there's been research either way on for or against them and while the hip dysplasia institute *does not* endorse either way they do mention "When babies are carried, the hips should be allowed to spread apart with the thighs supported and the hips bent."


 "The most unhealthy position for the hips during infancy is when the legs are held in extension with the hips and knees straight and the legs brought together, which is the opposite of the fetal position. The risk to the hips is greater when this unhealthy position is maintained for a long time. Healthy hip positioning avoids positions that may cause or contribute to development of hip dysplasia or dislocation. The healthiest position for the hips is for the hips to fall or spread (naturally) apart to the side, with the thighs supported and the hips and knees bent. This position has been called the jockey position, straddle position, frog position, spread-squat position or human position. Free movement of the hips without forcing them together promotes natural hip development."

This, the ergo back isnt actually very high and only goes about halfway up my 17 month olds back.  The beco is way better for older babies and toddlers.

 This is exactly what we do most of the time now in our Moby (at14months) she seems much happier being able to look around and see everything rather than walking backwards. Although a back or hip carry may accomplish the same thing.  Unfortunately from what I can find, no one around me carries the Beco!

We have the ergo sport or performance....can't remember, but it sucked. Maybe we should have gone with the regular. This time I'm going with the Beco. My friend has one and loves it.
