We let DS sit on the potty for quite a while in the beginning. He would read books, draw with a crayon and a notebook, and play with a small magna-doodle type toy that we have. Sometimes, we would have to say, "That's okay if you don't have to go potty right now. We need to wash our hands so we can A, B, or C ..." and then try again a little later on in the day. I think it's good that he doesn't mind sitting there for a while!
