XP: Where to go on vacation?

My husband's boss wants to send my DH, LO and me on a vacation anywhere we want to go as a "bonus" because he wants to reward my husband for really hard work over the last year. He said budget of 10 to 12k. Don't want to go anywhere too far away because of a long plane ride with an antsy toddler. We live in Connecticut. Thinking Atlantis in the Bahamas?? Any ideas/suggestions??

10-12K? No way would I waste that on Atlantis, but I am not a fan of all inclusive.

How much vacation time does he have?

We did 2 weeks in France for 5k when DD1 was almost 2. Don't be intimidated by the plane ride.

I would probably do something in Europe or an extra long Disney World/Disney Cruise trip or rent an awesome house for a few weeks in one of my favorite beach towns (Cape May, NJ) and go crazy w/ eating out/spending money. Maybe a  few week trip up the coast of California into the PNW? Rent a car, stay at awesome hotels?

Those are my initial ideas. I would take at least 2 weeks for sure.

Have you asked what kind of taxes he needs to pay on this?

We went on a Disney Cruise when DS was like 10 months.  We all loved it and he had a blast, too.  They have a lot to offer in the ways of accommodating children!

I agree with the other poster. I would definitely take the kids to Europe for a few weeks. We can go to the Caribbean any year since it is so close and not that expensive.

If you could find a Disney cruise in Europe, that would be great. Then you can have adult time while LO is in the nursery.  Otherwise, Beaches in Turks and Caicos has a great nursery for very little ones. We stay at Ritz' and Four Seasons all the time, but the children's programs at those hotels do not start until the kids are a little older.  A good vacation for our family means that not only do we have fun family time, but we get quality adult time too.

I'd definitely go to Europe! If you have a laptop or tablet, you can load movies on it for the plane ride.

I would go to Europe the plane ride from NYC wouldn't be any longer than flying to the bahamas. You could tour most of Europe for 10-12k and two weeks. Oh, I would also ask about maybe doing a 10k vacation and spending the other 2k on a baby sitter to bring with you!!

Personally, I don't think Europe with a toddler would be fun.  Too much walking/traveling/carrying a bunch of crap around = not relaxing.  I've heard that a lot of cruises are kid friendly. I am assuming a Disney cruise would be nice.  Are you looking for a tropical vacation? You could do an Alaskan cruise, but your budget might be tight or you could do Vancouver or Montreal.  What about like the Baja? I want to go to Huatulco Mexico, but that is just me. I think the Bahamas or any of those islands would be nice too. You could do Hawaii with a layover in Los Angeles. So many options!

Holy cow! I hope you realize you are a super lucky lady. Sounds awesome.
I would do an allinclusive, maybe a place that has a babysitting service? If its just you, your H, and your LO. It's hard to "relax" on vacay with a toddler. I'd do Hawaii if I were you. Splurge on a 2 room suite so you can put the baby to sleep in another room?

I agree with the others that have said a Disney cruise. I have not been one on myself but I have heard fantastic things about the new Fantasy ship. OR Beaches Turks and Caicos. I haven't been there but I have heard wonderful things. What in the world does your DH do??? Lucky family!!

Yikes - NOT the Atlantis in the Bahamas. The island has lost much of its natural beauty from all the construction, we went snorkeling and didn't find one fish. Also the Atlantis itself is a huge casino. There's lots of amazing Caribbean islands, two of our favorites are Barbados and St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands (no passport needed). Luggage notoriously gets delayed so pack your essentials in a carry-on. Go in the spring for the nicest weather :)

Wow, how nice of his company! It sounds like you have a lot of freedom with planning your trip. Have you considered visiting Massachusetts for your trip? There are so many things to do in Boston, and in the summertime, the Cape and Islands are an incredible vacation destination with awesome activities. You could rent a house and have your own space which is always a plus!  I have summered there numerous years and it is such a family-friendly area. With the beaches, bike trails, and so many other great attractions, I think it would be a great option for your trip!
