Hebrew/Jewish R names?

Tomorrow marks 8 weeks. We are nowhere near getting a name picked out, but I am really interested in honoring both my paternal grandmother and his maternal grandmother, who were both named Ruth. I would love to honor them with Rose, but I also want a solid Hebrew name that isn't going to be bludgeoned by teachers, etc.

I like Raya (rhymes with Maya) for a girl and I'm kind of into Raphael (would call him Rafi) for a boy, Either of those too completely obscure? There's also Roi/Roee/Roey, pronounced ro-EE, but I worry the kid would be called ROY!

Our last name starts with a G and is two syllables. Any other suggestions?

I think both Raya and Raphael are fine. I love Rafi as a nickname. For a girl some other names I like are Rivka Rebecca and Rona.

I LOVE Raphael with the nn Rafi or Rafe. I would use this name in a heartbeat if DH likes it. I like Raya also and I think people would get it but you may have to correct a few people. Roi I think you would have trouble with pronunciation. I also think Ruth is beautiful, easy to pronounce and would fit your bill of honoring your important people.

I really LOVE Rafi for a boy. I don't think it even needs Raphael. My son's Hebrew name is Rueven, after my mother. It is also my maiden name.

I also really love Raya. I also like Ronit (Ronnie) or Rebecca.

My DS1's Hebrew name is Rueven. Maybe something to consider. I do really like Rafi too.

Good luck! :)

I like Raya.

I have a cousin named Roey.  I think after the initial pronunciation there isn't a problem.

My favorite name would be Rachel and then Rebecca. Not really a fan of your choices.

Thanks, all! I love Rachel and Rebecca, too, since they are SO classic and even rare these days, but my two best girlfriends are Rachel and Rebecca, so it would be awkward to name potential DD with one of those. I also love Reuben/Reuven, so that's a good one to add to the list, and while Ronit is another good possibility, a college friend named his daughter Ronit and I hear too many people calling her "rah-nit" instead of "roh-neet." Of course I like Rina and Rayna, but again, we have two friends (though not as close) with those names. :)

We'll keep these in mind!

I love Raphael. Also, the female version, Raphaela, is pretty, although it sounds more Italian than Hebrew.

I like Rivka.

The only name on your list that I like is Raphael. I really like the NN Rafi! :)

The rest are awful and NMS.

While they might be not be your style, they are by far NOT AWFUL. If you aren't familiar with the ethnic/religious naming trends why respond in such a snarky way.
