Vent... GD test failed = prick a finger.

Long story short: I had to take the 1hr test at 14-15 weeks (history of diabetes throughout the family tree, hypoglycemic as a child/teen) and failed it. They made me take the 2hr test a week later, I failed it, and when I took the 3hr test the same week I barely passed. Now at 26 weeks, I had to re-take the 1hr test (standard testing is around 26-28 weeks) and I failed it again.

Well instead of having to take the 2hr test all over again, they gave me an Accu-Chek and sent me home, telling me to prick my fingers for 10 days, and call them back on January 3rd with my results. The nurse said I should eat as usual in order to get real time results, and test when I wake up, and two hours after each meal.

Only one tiny, little problem.

IT'S THE HOLIDAYS!!!

I had a Christmas brunch this morning, and scored a 7,3 mmol/L. Their ideal result is <6,7... So while I'm not too high, I'm still higher than they want me to be...

How the heck do they think I'm going to pass this while celebrating Christmas and NYE? That, and now that SO's family knows about this, they're saying I'm not being careful enough and I should stop eating sugary foods altogether, therefore I will not be allowed cake OR cookies on the 25th and the 31st, or ever.

Now, I don't care much for their cakes anyways, and I can get my own if I want some, but geez, thanks for the support effort. I'm not stupid and I won't binge on "bad foods". Urgh...

Alright, I'm done. Off to look at the delicious cookies and donuts my mother makes every year.

I, too, have a history of having diabetes in my family. My cousin was actually in a diabetic coma for a month - he had no idea he was a diabetic . All the men on my Grandma's side have it really bad - like it causes death and blindness to them. I even went to get tested myself a few years ago just to see where I stand and I was normal (it came back 5.3 both times, a yr apart from each other).

My MW never made me get tested early for this. She said I don't have to go until 24-28 weeks, (so I'll be going in soon).

But, "normal" is between 4-7.. if your numbers came back at 7.3, I really do not see the need to restrict yourself and freak out. It's the really high numbers to worry about.

I got my diagnosis and went to my diet class last Tuesday, so I feel ya Sad  It's really not too bad so far though-I'm spreading my carbs out, and yes, not enjoying all the Christmas cookies and fudge I normally would, but I allowed myself one homemade sugar cookie for one afternoon snack (accompanied by a string cheese for protein) and took a nice leisurely walk afterward.  Yesterday I had one small brownie, today I'm making small apple tarts (with lots of nuts for protein and some oatmeal in the filling for fiber).

Actually, "normal" differs from person to person. My mother's (type 2 diabetic) "normal" is a diabetic coma for the next person (14,5). Under 10 she is hypo, and over 17 she has to double her insulin dosage.

But for me, over 7 means fatigue, dehydration and sometimes even fever.

As for freaking out, I'm not, but I'm also a responsible mother to be and refuse to over indulge in sweets, especially since we all know that the Holidays are the perfect occasion to eat badly, ie tons of carbs and starch.

I actually did quite well tonight! I scored a 6! Yay! This might not be so bad after all... ;)

With my first I came in as on the edge in the 3hr test.  I got the whole finger prick kit and did my testing for about 3 weeks.  I found that I didn't have a problem, put the testing kit away and just ate sensibly (I'm not a sweet freak anyway).  DD was only 7lbs8oz at birth and she was born late at 42w1d.

With DS I was tested early and did fine then retested at 28w and still did fine.  DS was also in normal range at 8lb13oz at 39w.

I won't be tested early this time.

Is it common for people who have a history of diabetes to get tested for it while pregnant? Because my grandpa has it but i have never asked about it and i don't think my doctor is worried, but should i be?

It is standard practice to test everyone between 26 and 28 weeks, no matter if there is a history of diabetes or not.

If there is GD in your family, or someone close (parent or grand-parent) has either types of diabetes, they usually test you early if you are either overweight, smoking, or generally had a history of hypo or hyper glycemia in the past.

My mother never had GD, but she did develop Type 2 Diabetes after her cancer, and Type 1 is all over my family tree. I was hypoglycemic as a child/teen, and most of my health concerns then were tied to my blood sugar levels (migraines, vision troubles, etc) so they tested me early since I was having severe migraines from 7 weeks on, thinking it might be tied to that.
