Everyone we exchange gifts with knows that we keep our Christmas spending low so I would not try to rush out and match what you think they spent. We have one set of friends who regular buy $50 gifts for our kids, but she is a super shopper so I would guess she pays half price or less. So, while her gift is more expensive at face value, it may not necessarily cost more. To me, exchanging gifts is about taking the time and finding something the recipient will love, not making sure we spend the same amount.
