Re-Intro and (another!) Travel Question

Hello there! I feel like I've intro'd here before, but I may have imagined it.

We are an American/Mexican/Venezuelan family living in Aberdeen. Our twins were born in September 2012 in the US and we made the big trip over here when they were about 10 weeks old. I normally hang out in the Multiples board, but I do have a question for the international crowd!

We are hoping to make a trip to Venezuela this year to see DH's family, who haven't met LOs yet. We'd probably go via AirFrance. The twins will be right around 1 year-13 months old.

My concern is that we will NEED the carseats once we get there, so we have to take them. But how convenient is it to take them ON the plane to use? We will be lugging around two...and have them in the airport, etc.

And if we DONT take the seats on board, what else can we do with them? THey'll be too big for the bassinets, is it even worth it to get them a seat?

I am TTC in Norway, and I can't find any groups or organizations of non-Norwegians who have gone through this. I can't read Norwegian, so Norwegians groups aren't too helpful, even if I could find them. I really just want to be able to connect with some people to discuss how to navigate the system and what to expect when not conceiving easily.

Hi,

I've been lurking around The Bump for a while and now its time for me to come out of lurkdom. My husband and I have been married for just over 3 years and have a baby girl who will be 6 weeks on Friday.

We live in South Africa and will be flying to the Netherlands in September for a two week visit. The flight is almost 11 hours and LO will be 4 months old at the time of the trip. Now, for my question - has anyone taken similar trips with LOs and have some tips or things we have to keep in mind?

Hello, hello! I have been lurking for two months, and thought that at 12 weeks along I would finally get chatting. I am originally from Florida, now living in Vancouver, Canada and I love it here.

My husband's family is in Canada, but all of my family is still in the States. I wonder if any of you have experience with baby registries that allow you to add items across different websites.

Obviously, the retail options can differ between these two countries, but I am more concerned about getting dinged at customs on these gifts. This would be so much easier if Amazon.ca was half as massive (and well-priced) as Amazon in the U.S.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

xp: International flight advice for 23 mo old

Hi! We're headed to France in a couple of weeks and although I have read through a lot of travel posts, I have a few questions and thought I could get good advice from BTDT international moms!

DS is 23 mo old. We've bought him a seat on the airplane. Our flight is an overnight flight on the way there and a daytime flight on the way back.

1. Would you recommend using a car seat on the airplane? We'll probably take a Britax Marathon. I'm worried that we won't have any room to try and allow DS to lay across the seat or on our laps. He will sleep in his car seat but usu not for more than 2 hrs.

2. Can I gate check both a stroller and a carseat if I don't use the seat on the airplane?

3. Any advice on how to help him adjust to jet lag?

4. I'll be travelling back from France with DS and my mom but not DH. I'll have DS birth certificate but a few others have mentioned that I should have a notarized letter stating I can travel solo with DS. Anyone travel solo and have issues like this?

We're in Cambodia. We just found out we are prego. Went to a clinic and they didn't check anything...

So luckily we found an Australian midwife in town, who is willing to meet with us. Still, it wouldn't have been my first choice to go with a midwife.

Anyone else having the same issues?

I was wondering if any Canadian moms know how long you must work following your mat leave to be qualified to go on mat leave again? Is it 600 hours?

I am not TTC again yet, I go back in July and hope to try again in Nov/Dec, but I would like to make sure I am clear how it works! No matter how many times I read the Ministry of Labour site I still interpret it different each time.

carseat - US to Canada

I will be flying from the US to Canada and was wondering what to do about getting home with our 12 month old if her US car seat gets confiscated by Canadian customs. Taking public transport will be a bit complicated as I will be traveling alone with her and home is an hour away. A cab shuttle service from the airport exists but doesn't provide car seats. Does anyone know how strict they are with letting US car seats through at the border? And how do folks manage to get home without one?

Any chance anyone knows how to convert Canadian test results for FSH, Estrogen, LH, DHEA and TSH? For example, my estrogen came back at 3.0 but I read online it should be 30-400 but my doctor says it's normal so the units MUST be off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi ladies! I normally post on TTGP, but I was hoping this board would have some insight. I'm in the US currently, but we should find out in the next few months if we'll be headed to Belgium for 12-18 months for DH's job. We're also waiting to find out if we're going to be able to keep trying naturally or need to go straight to IVF. For now, I'm just trying to figure out a few basic things since there's not too much point in getting ahead of myself.

For anyone that has worked with an RE there, did you need to go to an OB for a referral or can you just make the appointment with the RE directly? Also, do you know if they will accept the results of the testing done in the US or if they will want to retest anything? I've never lived outside of the US, I'm not sure what to expect for differences in the medical systems.

I'm a bit home sick today. I'll be a FTM at the end of June. I've lived in sydney since the end of September and have slowly adjusted to a place where I'm feeling good here.

I'm just thinking about having the baby and the fact that none of my family or friends will see the little guy. We hopefully will make it home in January if all goes as planned but the baby will be 6 months by then. Ive met some nice people here but nowhere the network of friends and acquaintances that I have at home. I guess some days it just hits you more than others.

Anyone else feel like this?

EU/UK regulations for overnight sleeping in carrycot?

I think this is the best place to post this question. We have purchased the Inglesina Avio puschair system, which includes a carrycot and Maxi Cosi carseat. I would like to use the carrycot for overnight sleeping in our room (our mini crib won't even fit in the room with us) until Baby outgrows it. The bottom of the carrycot has slits in it and is therefore ventilated, at least on the bottom. I would like to buy a separate mattress that is properly ventilated, since the one that comes with the carrycot is not ventilated.
The carrycot is not approved for overnight sleeping. Will purchasing a properly ventilated custom mattress fix any problems there would otherwise be with using the carrycot overnight? Is there something else I am overlooking besides the ventilation issue? Should I be concerned that the sides of the carrycot do not have air vents? I don't exactly know what the regulations are.
I see Inglesina sells a stand for the carrycot, which leads me to think they envisioned the carrycot could be used as a type of moses basket ... but that must be just for short term sleeping?
I appreciate any thoughts/information.

I thought I'd start a new post rather than continue to take over the Northern Ireland board! I know there are a few of you out there, so, for those in Ireland (ROI):
I work remotely for a company from home, in our small apartment. When the baby comes, I am interested in finding someone to come to our home part time and watch the baby, and perhaps help with cooking (not required), while I am at home. I would like this person to also take the baby out while I stay home and work.
I had read up on childminders, creches, au pairs (live in, live out), and babysitter-type services, but am not finding anything that really fits my needs. So, can someone recommend where I can find (or a resource that will better explain):
1) A person to do what I described above (I want to hire one person; I am not interested in an agency that will substitute people in and out as they please); and
2) For a price that is reasonable, but legal (live out au pair seemed to fit, but then I read that people often pay them the "live in" au pair rate, but without covering their living expenses, which is not legal.)
Right now, we are trying to budget for child care, and it seems that we have to pay "minimum wage + taxes" .... but I don't know what minimum wage is here, and if that even applies to non full time people. Honestly, it looks like childcare is going to cost way more than I make as an attorney.
Again, any suggestions on websites or resources would be greatly appreciated!

This summer when I'd be ripe for my A/S scan, I'll actually be out of India and on vacation. I'm totally okay with popping into an ultrasound clinic or seeing a doctor (in fact, I've tentatively scheduled something in Amman) but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with ultrasounds/prenatal care in Egypt (Cairo), Jordan (Amman) or Turkey (Istanbul, Izmir or Selcuk).

Ideally, I just want a quick scan to bring back to my doctor in India to say "We checked and everything was good"... and if it's legal in those countries, maybe to find out gender. It's illegal to advise gender before birth here in India, and DH and I are interested in knowing if we can.

Upcoming trip, and I'm excited - Egypt, Jordan and Turkey, 40+ days of travel and fun... and my anatomy scan.

I'm excited to see what it is like out there, as well as to get my a/s done in a country where they can legally tell me the sex of the baby if we decide we want to know. I'm also very curious to see what life is like, travelling in the 2nd trimester, internationally.

Also, I'm trying to decide what sort of funky souvenirs to get. I'd like to get some stuff for the LO - maybe a hamsa if I can find a pretty one - and a few trinkets as souvenirs from the LO's first trip... albeit in utero!

The Joie Stages now goes up to 18kilo! You just have to make sure that it's the NEW model as the old only RF up to 13kilo and FF to 18kilo. I know Mothercare stock them in shops in the UK but sadly can't find them online at the moment but keep your eyes on the look out :)
