Weight Gain in NICU

My daughter is not quite a preemie, she was born at 36 weeks 5 days, but had IUGR so she was only 3 lbs 10 oz.

She has been on IV TBN and lipids for 3 days and her feeds started at 12 hours old starting at 4 mL, then 24 hours later 8 mL, and has had 3 feedings at 13 mL.

The morning after she was born her weight went down at 3 lbs 9.5 oz, but was back up the half ounce the next day.

I know it has only been 3 days, but it has still stayed the same. When did your baby start gaining weight and how quickly did it come on?

Forgive me if this has been asked recently; I haven't had my Wheaties yet.
How do you handle the whole actual age vs adjusted age with your preemie? For doctors appointments I assumed I'd give both ages unless they just want adjusted. But for preschools, friends, family, etc...do you give the actual or adjusted? Or am I doomed to telling my whole life story whenever someone asks? :]

There's probably no right answer, but I was wondering what all of you do. Thanks!!!

34-weekers- typical length of NICU stay

Hi ladies!

I have some complications with my pregnancy, and will need to deliver no later than 34 weeks. I saw my high risk doctor yesterday and everything points to me being able to hold out until 34 weeks, but I am being hospitalized in case this needs to be earlier. Baby is now 3 lbs, 11 ounces at 31 weeks.

I know that this can vary dramatically, but DH and I are just trying to get an idea of what to expect. I've asked various physicians on potential length of NICU stay at 34 weeks and get really different answers- from 1 to 6 weeks. My MFM doctor yesterday was saying that after my c section (3-4 day stay), the baby could potentially go home with us. (!?!).

We won't know for sure until the birth, but what have your experiences been with 34 weekers? Also, we've been stocking up on preemie clothes and diapers- but just today my friend (who had a 26 week micro-preemie) was saying we should be buying newborn, instead.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide.

weight gain issues

Feeling defeated right now. Lo had an appt for her weight check last night and only gained 3 oz since her check 1 month ago (she weighs 13 lb 1 oz). We've been batteling with reflux, seeing a gi specialist and switched her from zantac to prilosec last month. She started seeing nutrutionist and in addition to mixing her neosure to 24 calories, we've been putting olive oil in her purees and giving her mashed avocado (and we've been feeding her around the clock since she was discharged from the NICU- she takes her formula well when she's sleeping). So I was definately hoping for a bigger gain last night. Dr. tried to comfort us but it sucks. Has anyone had a similar situation? Did something at some point just "kick in" and your LO started eating more and gaining more weight?

I guess if things keep going this way she'll do pediasure when she gets old enough for it. I know I should be grateful that she didn't loose weight and I should be happy that she grew an inch, and that she doesn't have any other medical issues but right now, but I can't be thankful, I just feel crappy.

Nicu stay help plz

Hi ladies, I hope you guys can help. I don't have a preemie but I had Lo at 38 weeks and he had meconium for 2 weeks inside and he aspirated. Our nicu stay is 8 days and counting. I have no idea how to get through this. I can't help him get better, all I can do is be there. How did you ladies manage your nicu stay? Did u go all the time to visit? Multiple times a day? Camp out all day? We been there every 3 hrs to do cares and honestly I'm so tired and emotionally spent, I didn't go last night and I feel terrible. Tia for your insight in this.

Twins made their entrance in to this world yesterday at 6;32 AM, things are ok now, but it was scary for a few hours will go in to detail later.. . They doing very well now, but of course are in the NICU and will be for about the next 6/8 weeks, only time can tell... Praying hard all is we can do now and hope all will be ok. Celia Jane is 3 lb. 8oz, James Henry is 4, lb 2oz. Celia has strawberry blonde hair and big blue eyes ( like me) and James has brown hair and blue eyes like dad. They both have a mighty grip and nice screaming cries and can not wait to see them tomorrow.

I am feeling a little lost as to what to expect. I feel like the doctors are talking at me and not to me. I don't know if I am just overwhelmed but I am just not understanding and my anxiety is through the roof. Can someone talk me through this a little.

32 weeks and Dilated

Hi everyone, I'm 32 weeks pregnant today. I was admitted to the hospital at 31 weeks dilated at 4cm,
100 effaced and bulging membrane.
In the last 24 hours the baby has not stopped moving , at moments it's actually painful. The dr's don't want to check me so they don't break my water. I'm not sure if I've dilated more or if all these movements mean she is lowering more each minute. Ha anyone else experienced this? If yes how long did baby stay inside?
I already have a healthy preemie born at 32 weeks for a completely different reason. I was sure I would make it to term with this pregnancy .

Research into bedrest and prematurity

Have to admit I'm a little froggy about this. It's probably the title of the article and then the call back to the title that really got my goat.

Sounds like the sample group was culled from a group of high-risk pregnancies, to boot. I feel like a study that assigned bed rest randomly to women with (1) no history of premature births and (2) no high-risk complications otherwise associated with premature births - would be closer to what these folks want this study to show.

I was writing a nice long comment to this piece on Mommyish and my phone pretty much shut that idea down, so I am now having impotent rage, and just wanted to share. With my PTL at 25 weeks and contractions any time I stood up for too long or moved too much, I attribute the additional 5-6 weeks of extra cooking of my boys to bed rest before PPROM at 31 weeks.

Really looking forward to know-it-alls telling me that my bed rest "caused" the premature birth of my twins. Not like I don't always have the sting of thinking my body failed me. Guess I should've gotten "off my butt."

Full term pregnancy after previous preterm labor?

Has anyone had full term pregnancies after having a preemie? My husband and I are wanting to try for a second but we are going in a little nervous because we had our first at 27 w 6 d and had a two month NICU stay. There was no apparent cause, it was spontaneous. I know it could have been worse and we are so lucky and thankful to have our little beauty but it was stressful and I couldn't imagine going through it again with a little one at home.

I guess the point of this post is to hear of your experiences and get some positive thoughts going. :)

Steroid Shots?

I'm not on this board. But I admire all of you and creep on here often and pray for all of you and your tiny ones. :)

I'm 27 weeks with IC (cerclage at 21.6) and IU (lots of "BH" contractions, ugh) My question is there any reason why I shouldn't have steroid shots? My doc says he doesn't do them unless labor is imminent. But what if we don't have 48 hours from when I go in to when they are born...? I suppose I wouldn't have them every two weeks until they get here, but sometimes that does sound appealing. Any advice would be appreciated. I'll be talking to the doc a week from today and would be curious what you all had to say before we talk it over.

When did you have them? How many rounds? Did it help? Or any other info you'd care to share...

O2 at home question

What was your home o2 road like? Ever have to increase?

DS2 came home at 4mo actual 1 month adjusted on .25 liters of continuous O2 in Dec. He was diagnosed with Pulmonary Vein Stenosis and pulmonary hypertension shortly after coming home. Our pulmo let the cardiologist take the lead because of the underlying heart condition. We increased his O2 to .75 liters at the end of March.

2 weeks later he had a heart catheter and angioplasty done to treat the stenosis and hypertension. We went to NOLA to have it done by a specialist in PVS. He commented multiple times after the cath about how bad his lungs looked, presumably from BPD.

Last week we went in to have an outpatient endoscope done because of GI issues. While in recovery he was requiring 2 liters of O2 and we ended up being admitted for three days. He was happy as could be and we were finally discharged on 1.5 liters of o2 and a home pulse ox. He is still sating mid 90's and the pulmo is very concerned.

He is now 9mo actual 6 mo adjusted and 15 lbs. the cardiologist is happy from his standpoint that the hypertension is much lower. The pulmno said he has never had a patient with PVS and he plans to come an expert before our appt next week. He is talking about doing a lung biopsy to test for ILD.

Sorry this got so long. It's been so overwhelming and the cardiologist and pulmonologist both looked at me last week and said "I don't know what to do or what to expect with him."

Childcare Question

At our last two u/s it looks like the baby boy's growth has dropped off, and unless things change, we are planning a C Section for 34 weeks.

We had previously been planning on trying to find an in home day care for the twins when I go back to work in September-with them coming earlier than planned, is this something we need to reconsider?

I don't want to put them at risk if being around a small # of other children would be detrimental to their health, and we could look into a nanny instead.

Mostly likely I will wait until after they are born and see exactly what their situation is before making any concrete child care plans, but I wanted to see your thoughts.

The other week I was cleaning out some of the baby clothes to take a donation to the NICU and I found only one preemie outfit. Hubby and I decided to get a picture of the girls with the outfit.

Annabelle (left) asked the next morning if we could keep the outfit for her baby doll. I obviously let her. It fits her American baby doll perfectly. Just a small reminder how little my girls were and how much they have grown.

iron?

Probably like many of you, we have been putting a few scoops of preemie formula in a bottle of breastmilk every day in addition to our regular breastfeeding so LO can get some extra calories. This has iron, and we also add iron via dropper. Although in her early days, she'd have a poopy diaper every 5 minutes, at 4 months, she takes about 4 days to go and has a lot of straining. Her doctor says this is fine but to watch for blood. The last few diapers look like typical bf diapers but there are some thicker black globs. They almost look like cat fur, but they're not. I read this could be caused by iron, but how can I tell if this is iron or blood? Thanks!

When did your kids truly start walking? V has been cruising since december and taking steps for about 5 weeks and while she seems to be getting better the progress towards truly walking seems painfully slow.

She is a former 25 weeker, now 18.5 months. She did not experience any brain bleeds. We get PT 1x/week. We have push toys galore. any insight?

Chances of having another preemie?

My DD just turned 8 months yesterday. She's my 1st child. I had her unexpectedly at 32 weeks due to unknown PTL. I had no idea she'd come early. My entire pregnancy was so easy & I had no problems. Luckily DD is healthy & never had any health concerns.

Here's my question: what's the chances of me having another preemie? I hear there's a higher chance. I want to start TTC again & don't want to go through a preemie & NICU again.. How many of you had preemies again?

Ok, so I know I need to go by adjusted age with milestones, and even then they will do things on their own time but my PT is really stressing me out. I have a 26 weeker who is now 8 1/2 mo. old so 5 1/2 mo. adjusted and she is on my case about how he should be doing more. He doesn't roll back to front yet, but tries hard, and he can't sit steady in a bumbo or with a boppy yet because his trunk isn't quite strong enough. Should I actually be worried? I really like our PT and she comes every 3 weeks or so so that right there shows she's not too worried since she doesn't want to come more often, but she always seems worried. At the same time, I am constantly having to remind her of his adjusted age. I've been stressing about this and googling milestones like twice a day from different sources because she has me freaked out. Advice please ladies!

Last week Updates:

Congratulations to komurphy who gave birth to DS-he was 31 weeks exactly and weighed 3lbs. 9oz. After a couple of weeks in the hospital, she started to bleed and drs discovered that she was fully dilated with bulging membranes. Because of the threat of the prolapsed cord, they decided to do an emergency CS. She reports that DS is doing well in the NICU. Please keep her and LO in your thoughts and prayers for a short and uneventful NICU stay. komurphy-please keep us updated on how he is doing.

CurlingRocks: had AS and have to do a follow up on the heart since LO was not cooperating with that part; Team Green! Also felt outside kicks for the first time!

adamnkel: appt was on Monday-how did it go?

TriciaandSean: passed last pg milestone! She only has 1 more progesterone shot to go and 2 more weeks before reaching FT status!

sdtchica13: also passed last pg milestone! shots are working and cervix is behaving. Next big milestone is 32 weeks!

Mommy 2CB: has reached 35 weeks and will have last NST. So close to being FT! Way to go!

tlk432: appts with OB and MFM went well and LO measured right on track for 30 weeks at 3lbs.2oz!
