suck. I could tell T had a fever and every time I took it with the fancy digital in his ear it would say 96 something. I finally used an old school thermometer in his arm pit and sure enough, he has a temp of 100.

So E is 18 months now and will say a few words, understands DH and I quite well, follows directions, and all the rest. What bugs me is that even though he can say things, he won't say them. It's not as if he stays silent - he'll babble incoherently - but he won't use the words he knows to ask for things, even when I prompt him.

I know it's not a problem with his understanding or development, it's just driving me nuts at the moment having to play 20 Questions to figure out what he wants when he just wants to use nonsense words! Anybody else still waiting on improved speech? (As I say, there's nothing wrong with him, it'd just be easier if he'd use his words more often!)

Also, random aside: does anyone know a good place to look to buy a toy vacuum? E is obsessed with our vacuum cleaner but is just now throwing fits when I tell him that it's not a toy, so he can't just play with it whenever he wants. DH suggested getting him a toy vacuum, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Thanks, ladies!

Chocolate milk

I can't get T to drink milk out of anything other than a bottle. I've tried a million different cups, times of day, cuddles, and no matter what I do he just makes a face at the first sip and refuses to drink more. He also won't drink it out of a bottle unless I hold it for him.

I make sure he eats yogurt and cheese, and make him smoothies and things like whole grain Mac and cheese to try to sneak more milk products into him.

My SIL said her kids were the same way but she could get them to drink half white milk half chocolate milk out of a sippy no problem. My initial reaction was hell no, because of the sugar, and thinking it would be setting a precedent for giving "treats" if he refuses healthy alternatives. Or is it more important that I give him milk in any form he'll accept? Or is it ok that he doesn't drink milk at all as long as he's getting other milk products?

I got about 2 hours of sleep last night due to the fact that I stayed up watching for storms and DD waking up for about 3 hours. I take her to the sitter's house where she bawls when I leave her. I kept thinking about those parents who lost children yesterday and cried on the way to work and when I got to work. Then, I had called my dad to come fix my toilet since DH left town this morning. He flooded part of the bathroom so I rush home to help clean up. And we are having severe weather this afternoon. I need a drink.

I'm checking out a gal's home tomorrow for possible daycare once a week with N. I decided I needed one day a week to achieve things without a toddler, and it wouldn't hurt for her to have some socialization outside of the normal GTG with friends here and there. FX this sitter is a fit, because finding anyone to do part time daycare is near impossible around here.

After being away for a few days I made the mistake of stepping on the scale this morning. I gained 10 f!cking lbs in 5 weeks! I nearly died. Thing is, I didn't overindulge and I did a ton of walking. It's super humid and hot here and my fingers look like sausages and they are hard to close, my ankles are gone, and when I wake up in the morning my body is creased from the water retention. I have an u/s this afternoon an I'm sure my dr will b!tch me out. So, how can I alleviate or prevent future swelling? Any suggestions?

DH was being a super jerk all weekend. He had a bad attitude and was complaining about everything.

Yesterday afternoon, he spiked a fever. He literally woke me up every time he got hot and every time he got cold all night. He whined the whole time he was getting ready for work today and I'm already tired of this illness.

Would it be inappropriate to take the girls and leave for a few days?

Update: I was at the grocery store when DH got home from work with DD1. He was sitting on the couch playing on his iphone and started complaining as soon as I walked in the door. He stated that he still was achy. I asked if he took anything and he said he hadn't had time. Seriously? Your playing with your stupid iphone.

He hadn't given dd1 a snack so as soon as I walked in she was asking for milk and yogurt. While I was fixing it for her, he said, I've just been giving her cookies.

He then stated she was acting tired and laid her down for a nap. That was like 15 minutes ago and she's still screaming. I try not to get her up while she's crying, so I was waiting her out.

Now he's complaining that I'm just letting her scream.

I'm soooo over this.

A couple of days ago DS got out of the house and went for a walk with the dog. A neighbour saw him go and brought him home before he got hurt. He had been playing in the kitchen while DH did dishes and somehow he managed to get the sliding door open and went outside unnoticed. He wasn't gone long enough for DH to even realize that it was a little too quiet where DS had been playing because the neighbour saw him leave and only waited a few seconds to see if a parent was following before she decided that DS was on his own. THank god she had been watching. Scared the sh!t out of me. Saturday was spent making sure that, that could never happen again.

Spent last night in the emergency room with DD because she was practicing dance in the living room and tripped and cracked her head on the only sharp baseboard corner in the whole effing house. Being a head wound there was a ton of blood for a not very big cut but still needed to take her to the hospital to get them to close it up. Glue only and not stitches thankfully. But it being the Sunday of a long weekend here it was of course very busy and we were there for 4 hours.

Memorial Day Weekend Plans?

I feel like doing something fun in addition to some projects outside, but I don't know what. Looking for inspiration. We have a 4 day weekend as MH does not work Fridays, and all I have for ideas is a little gardening, repainting the front door, and going to the drive in movies if something good is playing.

My doctor's office sucks

It's slow, so I'm going to whine.

T had his 18 month checkup on Friday, and when we were checking in at the receptionist, and the douchebag doctor who was a prick to me when T broke his collarbone happened to be there. The only thing he said to me was "ooh, he looks evil" with a straight face, definitely not joking. WTF? Who says that about a toddler? This man is chief of staff at the hospital. T wasn't even doing anything. I was just standing there with him and he wasn't acting up or making noise or anything. Evil? Really?

And then at the appointment, my doctor read milestones from a checklist, then asked me if T was potty trained yet [which wasn't on the list]. I said no, we haven't started because I don't think he's ready, and asked him what the recommended timeline was for potty training. He GOOGLED it in front of me, read an article on babycenter.com, and said "oh, looks like 2 to 3 years is normal. You should start when he turns 2." Okay. I really feel like I'm getting excellent medical care here /sarcasm.

This story has nothing to do with me, but one of my neighbours had a heart attack last summer, and it took the ambulance 1.5 hours to get to him even though we live 20 minutes from the hospital. The town only has one ambulance and it was out on another call at the time. Dispatch was supposed to call an ambulance from another town, but it didn't happen for whatever reason. Scary shiit. Luckily, the guy didn't die, but it makes me nervous to think about if we ever needed to call an ambulance for a medical emergency.

Yet another reason why I want to move away from this godforsaken place.

WTF, USPS?

One of my friends sent me a package awhile back Priority mail and it took almost 2 weeks for it to get here. I received it today and it was taped shut, bulging with contents, and in a bag that said something about sorry that we damaged your package. Okay, but it didn't even look like whatever was in the box fit in there initially. I open it and it has a bunch of random stuff in there: a brand new Samsung Galaxy III, a Mother's Day card with no address on it that has a $25 GC in there, a couple of tubes of medication with Arabic writing on there and some children's toothpaste. I asked my friend what the package was supposed to contain (thank you card, toothpaste, and sunscreen). WTF?

The post office here seriously sucks. I've received more damaged mail and a couple of damaged packages since living here than my whole life anywhere else. To make the situation weirder, I had MH call the number on the GC to see if they could refund the money to the CC it was purchased on and cancel the GC, but he dialed the wrong number and some lady was trying to tell him that he had won a cruise. Right. I feel bad for the mom who didn't receive her Mother's Day card.

I've put in a complaint about our post office before but never heard anything back.

Are any of your LO's obsessed with weird things?

Violet loves wash clothes. If it was her choice she would carry a wash cloth around all day long and night. She loves wiping her face, the furniture, the dog...you name it. If you take it away it is the end of the world. This has been going on since January. We were joking when we saw this ad that we should stock up for Christmas, but maybe we should.

S/O of Potty Training - Body Part Terminology

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed, but I can't find it.

Are you of the mindset to use anatomically correct words for private parts? Or do you have other names for them?

MH is a little freaked out by talking "vagina" with DD. Perhaps it's a father/daughter thing, but he calls it a "choo-choo". Not sure where he got that.

On the other hand, I make sure to explain to B that it's her vagina. And she's even starting to say "gina" when she touches there. (And boy does she search and look and touch there.)

I think in time, MH will get more comfortable with this. I've explained to him that she needs to be able to communicate to anyone, not just us, if something is wrong. Telling people her "choo-choo" hurts might not get her the help she needs. LOL.

Fed up with mealtime antics

I am looking to commiserate but any advice would be helpful as well. DD has been driving me crazy with her mealtime behavior. She is a picky eater and I typically try hard to make her food that she is more likely to eat, which often means something all together different from what DH and I are eating. She may eat well on some occasions, but most of the time she just plays around with her food, nibbles some things, dumps her drink all over everything, mashes her food, splashes around and slurps up the liquids from the tray or plate with her face. It's revolting to watch her eat and I'm just sickened over the waste of food and my efforts. It's a major mess to clean up her and the eating area several times a day and there's no way for me to salvage anything for later if she gets hungry. Maybe it's just because she's really been very mischievous lately and my pregnant azz is exhausted from keeping up with her, but my patience is getting thin. I should add that she has great dexterity, can use utensils and doesn't really do this as much when we go out, so it's not that she's incapable of eating normally.

How can I work on better table manners and discourage this type of behavior or is it unrealistic for me to expect more at this age? I've tried gritting my teeth and ignoring it and I've tried verbal reprimands, but so far nothing has discouraged it.

Ladies with Pixie Cuts/Short Hair

I've been growing my hair out for as long as I can remember and I just really need a change. I cut and donated 11 inches over the summer but haven't had it cut since so of course it's become a shaggy and unhappy hair cape.

I've always wanted to cut it all off, like really REALLY cut it off, but I don't know if I have the stones to do it. I'm worried that I'll hate it after a few days and will spend the next three years trying to grow it out. I'm thinking of something like these styles, but have a feeling they're a lot more work than what they seem:

Those of you with short hair - do you love it? I guess this post is less of me asking a question and more of me wanting someone to pat me on the head and tell me to stop being such a wuss. Mostly I think I'm coming to the realization that if I don't want to look frumpy, I'm going to need to start blow-drying my hair with something other than the dashboard air conditioner vents.

Who's LO's are using a pillow?

recently I had been folding up a small blanket as a pillow when I put Gator to bed. She rolls so much that I figured she didn't need a pillow. Then I noticed a few nits ago that if her makeshift "pillow" is waded up, she lays with her head on a lumpy stuffed animal. Last night she woke up crying and after I asked her a thousand questions on what she needed, I asked her if she needed a pillow and she got excited, stopped crying, and said yes. After making up her blanket pillow, she went right back to sleep.

i am wondering if I should just go ahead and get her a pillow...
