When potential employers call your references? Good sign?

DH interviewed with a company on Monday for an energy analyst position that he was pretty well qualified for and at the end of the interview the hiring mgr asked for his references. The very next morning, DH's former boss told him that the hiring mgr called him (he gave him a great reference).

So....that's good right? I mean, it would be one thing if the recruiter or HR was calling (could be standard procedure etc etc) but if the hiring mgr himself calls....that's a very good sign, isn't it?

Gosh, I hope he gets this job. He is interviewing all over the country and this job is local...which would be great bc we wouldn't have to move!!

Well, it's certainly not a BAD thing.

The only caveat is they could be calling references on more than one finalist, to help sway a choice.

Yes- it's a good sign.  While he may not be the ONLY candidate they are calling references on, they aren't going to waste their time on people who they know they are NOT interested in.  So - you know they are interested and that he's probably one of two or three peopel who are in the final run for the job.

In my experience, checking my references has simply been the last step before offering me the job.  If they check my references, I usually take for granted that the job is in the bag.  That's just my experience but 100% of the time, that's how it's been for me.

It usually depends on the company what the process is.  MOST will call references when they're about 80-90% sure that they've found Their Guy (or Gal).  As others noted, he may not be the only "final" candidate, but it's certainly a good sign.  Good luck!!

I would say overall it's a good sign--they're not going to waste their time calling unless they were serious about him.

The only thing--DH interviewed 6 different times with 10 different people at a company.  After the final interview, they called his references.  In the meantime, he got another job offer.  He called the first company to follow up and see where they were at in the process and  to say he got another job offer.  He never heard back from them either way-- that he did not get the job--not even a form letter.

Thanks everbody for your insight. I am an attorney and have had 2 jobs since law school and neither employer has ever called my references. My DH has had 3 jobs since out of college and he has never had them call references before either.....so we aren't sure what it means. Most of our friends have told us that it means that he got the job and the references are just a formality...but I don't want to be that optimistic....
