Question about having a drink during pregnancy.

I am not pregnant but was scrolling thru the 2nd tri boards and one of the girls post was titled like Please Flame Me.  She was drinking a small glass of sangria and the other girls responded that they occasionally have a glass here and there.  They were joking amongst each other about the pregnancy police etc....

when i was pregnant i personally couldnt imagine having any alcohol at all during pregnancy regardless if i was stressed.  I think i would be more stressed having a glass of wine.  Did any of you have alcohol during your pregnancy? Not in the beginning when you really didnt know but in the 2nd and 3rd tris?  I know when i read that post i felt like i was judging these girls i am sure no damage done to the baby but i would think other ways to reduce stress IMO.  Thoughts???

I had one glass of wine on our anniversary (I was about 25 weeks).  I didn't really enjoy it  (I craved water like crazy during pregnancy), so I didn't do it again.  If I had enjoyed it, I probably would have had another at some point.

IMO the no alcohol thing stems more from Dr. being afraid of being sued, rather than real research.  My own MW sometimes recommends a glass during early labor to help the Mom relax and rest up.

I didn't have any...but I probably would have had I not had hyperemesis (could barley keep any fluids down) and gone into the hopsital for good at 31 weeks. If it had been a great pregnancy with no complications, I probably would have had a glass of wine on occassion near the end.

Yes, I drank / drink while pregnant.  With Colin, before I found out I was pregnant, we were at an all inclusive resort in Mexico for our anniversary.  I didn't have much because for some reason (lol) I kept getting heartburn while drinking.  Once I found out I was pregnant (the day we got home), I didn't drink the rest of 1st tri and then only had a glass here and there for special occasions.... birthday, Thanksgiving, etc.

With this pregnancy, I did not drink during 1st tri and have had 2 or 3 glasses of wine... again, for special occasions only.

I didn't and won't.  I don't get not being able to give things like that up, but I also don't really like to drink.

Actually a new study was just released that said that even minimal amounts of acohol can cause small delays in a baby. I just don't see why it is worth the risk. I mean we can all go 9 monhs without a drink right?

I did.  After 1st Tri.  Not a ton, but I'd share a beer or glass of wine with DH if we were out to dinner or whatever on occasion.

Andrewsgal - I'd love to see the citation for that study.  I haven't heard about it and would like to read it before I get pregnant again:)

Both pregnancies, I maybe have had a total of 4 sips of DH's beer.  I, too, would be so stressed to have an actual drink during pregnancy, though I don't think badly of those that have had a drink or two.  I would get all judgy on moms-to-be drinking regularly and/or excessively.  I can wait till Feb.--my co-workers are joking they're going to bring a gift basket of stinky cheese, raw fish and alcohol to the hospital.

Just once with Lucas and I haven't at all with this one.  The once with Lucas was a glass of wine, in my 3rd tri, at a fancy work dinner.

I had a few glasses of wine in the third tri, but I may change my stance based on how valid this study that came out turns out to be. .

My OB actually said a couple glasses of beer/wine on occasion, after the     1st tri. was ok.

But, I didn't drink at all during my pregnancy.  I kept saying, I was going to save it for a special occasion, but I just had no desire.  I was kinda anal about things during my pregnancy.  I guess it probably stemed from the m/c I had prior to getting pg w/DS.

relax!  A glass of wine or beer here or there throughout your pregnancy will not hurt you or the baby.  If you don't feel comfortable, great - but try to keep an open (and educated) mind.

I don't get not being able to give it up. I also don't get it when people say "Oh my doctor said a glass here or there is fine". The official stance of the American Association of OB is that no amount is safe during pregnancy. Why does your OB know more than them??? If my doctor gave me information that went against an official statement from a group that represents doctors I'd find a different doctor- or at the very least ignore their advice.

And any long term percocet use during pregnancy is just selfish and stupid. My MIL is a NICU nurse and has told me horror stories of babies coming off of a Percocet withdrawal.

I could not agree more, I just don't understand not giving it up for nine months, I don't see how it can be that hard.

I am looking for the study it is was sent to me in  MOD email so I am looking for the link

ABM- I had an open appendectomy at 25 weeks.  Try not to take a percocet after that.

they don't know what amount is safe. i don't care what anyone else does, but if my child had any problems, i'd blame myself forever for it.

I said prolonged use :) I'm sure that you would HAVE to take something for the pain after an appendectomy! My aunt had one at 24-25 weeks as well when she was pregnant- they told her if had been any earlier or any later she would probably have lost the baby. I'm glad everything turned out okay for you!

What new study? There's always going to be a "study" coming out that supports any argument you put out there.

I had a glass of wine on occasion while pregnant, and my child is fine. In fact she is using phrases, if not sentences now. Hardly what I would call a delay.

ETA: If I was not having a normal complication-free pregnancy, I would have not had a drop. I would have also given up caffeine.

Cripes, maybe DD's lack of speech is due to my non-drinking!!! Someone call the pregnancy police!@!! lol

I tried to have a glass of wine a couple times but it actually made me nauseous so I didn't get very far with it. It had nothing to do with stress, though. IMO if someone is drinking because they're under stress there are other issues that need to be dealt with.

This... I  have taught Kids with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and would not be able to live with myself if I caused this or any other delay because of something as silly as a glass of wine.

That being said its your body, your pregnancy...

I took two sips of wine at Christmas, and felt guilty, so I gave the glass to DH to finish. Even though I knew I could have it, I was scared to drink it.

I have sips of DH's beer every time he has one.  And actually, I was thinking about making sangria for Thanksgiving so I could have a small glass, but then most of my family informed me they wouldn't drink any and the rest would go to waste, so I won't be having any.

I am way too paranoid to have enjoyed a drink at all when I was pregnant, so I abstained. I did try a sip of my friend's glass of wine when I was about 37 weeks, so I guess I fell off the wagon that day :)
