Visiting San Diego next week, advice?

DH and I will be in San Diego the 9th-14th for his work convention. We are staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (I think that's what it's called?). Neither one of us have been to San Diego before.

I will have the mornings/early afternoons to myself to relax, wander and explore. DH will be available in the late afternoons and evenings. Any recommendations on what to do, where to eat, places to go/not go? We will not have a rental car, so I need suggestions that are in walking distance or easy to get to via taxi or other public transportation.

Kind of a silly question, but what should I pack?? We're coming from frigid northern MN where I wear very casual (jeans and sweaters/fleece) clothes everyday. I am clueless when it comes to packing for other climates, lol.

Thanks ladies!

Sounds like you will be right in the heart of Downtown San Diego! Which will be awesome, you should be within walking distance to lots of restaurants and boutique shopping. There's also the Horton Valley Mall downtown with a lot of stores and a movie theatre. You could also go to Seaport Village, it's a nice little area with restaurants and stores along the water. There's quite a lot of things to do downtown you should have fun!! As for what to wear, I'd say dress for summer, but with a breeze. Dresses, shorts, skirts. It's normally pretty warm during the day, but kind of chilly at night. Hope I have been some help!

I agree with the pp's advice.  You will not need a car. The downtown area is really small.  I would suggest riding the ferry to Coronado (you can pick it up by all the boats downtown).  From there you can walk around, but I would take a cab to the Hotel Del Coronado.  It's beautiful!  If you want you can rent bikes and take them over on the ferry to Coronado or just ride them around downtown. There are plenty of places for beautiful sunset dinner views downtown.

I have to disagree with what to bring to wear though.  Although shoes and socks are not necessary during the day, it really cools off at night.  Sweater and light coat with pants for sure.  It is super casual here too, so jeans and a fleece would be perfect.  Since you are coming from northern MN you might find the temp to be warm, but for me...it feels like winter (not a midwest winter, I'm from Chicago originally)!

Have fun!

I'm originally from mid-Michigan and I also think it feels cold out a lot.  Earlier in the morning and then when the sun starts to set it gets chilly.  Def bring sweater/over-jacket or something of the sort...

Eat at Sally's Seafood on the Water. It is a restaurant in the Manchester Grand Hyatt but freestanding of the hotel. They have great food! (Good Sushi too but not for you!)

Go to Extraordinary Desserts, for dessert and coffee obviously but they alse have great sandwiches, salads and cheese platters.  It is located on Union St., downtown/ little italy.

I would bring your rain gear.  It is raining right now and is suppose to rain over next weekend.

The zoo/balboa park are a taxi or bus ride away.  Not too far from downtown.  It is possible your hotel will have a shuttle.

there is so much to do here.  You could walk around downtown and find lots of neat little shops to visit. walk to little italy and experience some of the great italian food around there. horton plaza mall will keep you busy too.   i woudl definately pack rain gear ( so much for sunny San Diego huh?) jeans and light long sleeve or 3/4 sleeve woudl be sufficient for the colder days but make sure to bring capris and shirt just in case.
