OP posted this on another board and explained it's a shower where the gifts are brought unwrapped to be eco-friendly and to save time.

Thank you for the explanation! I must have missed that other thread, sorry about that! Big Smile

I have only ever attended showers like this, but around here, they are called display showers. (in invitation it says "Display Shower. No Gift Wrap Necessary.")

What happens is this :

Guests show up with gifts. Hosts put gifts on tables on display in categories. (Feeding items together, etc.) Hosts also write down who brought what (so writing Thank Yous will be easier!)

This leaves more time for eating and socializing and games, perhaps.

If guests would like to see mom-to-be (or bride-to-be's) gifts, they can get up and check them out.

It's nice bc then you don't have to sit around and watch the mom or bride-to-be open every single gift and "ooh and ahh" over every single little item.

I was told that a lot of folks around here do display showers bc it is easier on the guests and more guests are likely to show up, plus no paper is wasted. Who knows? Everyone does showers differently, I am sure.

Good luck...I hope this helps! :)

Out of curiosity, how many guests are we talking about?  I can't imagine gift unwrapping to be an unmanageable time burden...

I think it can be done well, and I would have loved it, but taking all of the crappy parts of school away from a kid isn't good for them in the long run.

There are lessons like "Not everyone likes you" and "Some people are douche bags" that you don't learn without socializing in a large group of poorly supervised children.

If you're asking OP, I think she is trying to be EF. But if you're asking me, the showers I have attended or had thrown for me usually have had anywhere from 30 to 50 guests attend. (I come from a large Italian family and we have always had display showers.) Also, a lot of friends and co workers have had them so I just really thought they were the norm.

I really love this idea.  I think I might use it for my non-traditional shower also.  I had never heard of it before, but it makes so much sense. I also did not plan to open gifts and I was not sure how to get around it without seeming snooty.

Very interesting.  I've never attended a shower like this and would not have "followed through".  Part of my gift IS the wrapping!!  lol  I like to see the look on the mom-to-be's face when she opens my gift.  Otherwise I wouldn't even bother attending the shower...I'd just send the gift if I didn't care if I saw her open it or not.  I go to many showers that I don't know anyone but the mom-to-be (sometimes I only know the mother of the mom-to-be) so I would have no other reason for going.  Not like I'm going to socialize with a bunch of people I don't know.

My friend's baby shower took nearly two hours.

Her mom handled the invites and invited everyone under the sun, including all the men... and people came. Everyone came. In-state, upstate, out-of-state... About 70 people? She reckons more. And most of them gave multiple gifts and she had to pick up each one and show it off and everyone ooh'd and ahh'd and left before she was done unwrapping everyone's gifts.
