Am I overfeeding?

So I'm curious what you all think. I've asked the pedi about it and he says there is no set amount per child. Each child is different, I know this. He's eating everything I give him just fine but it just seems in comparison to some other babies on here, he's eating double and triple the amount of solids as other's his age. He also probably weighs more but now I'm worried.

Background on DS:

Over the 97% on both height and weight. Weighed 24.8lbs last Friday.

In a given day he's having:

16-20 oz. of baby food (3 meals)

At least 2Tbs of cereal (rice or oatmeal)

At least 28 oz. of formula

Add in puffs, mums, banana pieces etc at various times a day also.

SO, do you think these amounts are normal for his size? :-) Thanks!

I think at this age, you can't really overfeed solids.  Let him eat as much as he is interested in so long as you aren't replacing any formula with solids.  I BF so I don't know what a normal/recommended amount of formula is for any given baby.

Also, if you started him on solids at 4mo he will most likely be eating more than babies who started at 6mo.

Agree. To me that seems like a lot, but I have a baby who has no interest in solids and eats maybe a few spoonfuls per day. If your pedi sees no problem with it, and he still is getting most of his nutrients from BM/formula, I see no issue.

I believe that you can't overfeed babies. Unlike many adults (myself included), babies eat until they're full and then stop. When Isaac decides he's done eating there's nothing I can do to convince him to eat more.

So if your kid wants to eat all that, I say let it happen.

OK, that's kind of how I feel about it too. Just started seeing some drastic differences on here. :-)

Eli is the same way. When he's done, it's over. So as long as your LO is eating them, I wouldn't worry about it.

Really? Some babies (especially if they are overfed from the beginning since some parents have a hard time picking up the "i'm done" cues) do have trouble stopping when they are full. Studies show bottle fed babies have a harder time sensing when they are finished because they don't get the benefit of the richer fore-milk and then the nutrient-pumped hind-milk (I pumped exclusively from the day we brought him home because he wouldn't latch. I also had to stop BFing at 3 months due to DS's intolerance, so it's something I researched. Not judging anybody!) So some kids if they are left to eat all day could face problems later. Not all. Some.

OP, if your pedi doesn't have a problem with it, I wouldn't be concerned. But every once in awhile, maybe cut back on one of the solids at a feeding. If your baby is truly still hungry, he'll let you know. Our DS might fuss a little bit when we put the spoon away, but if we pop his paci in his mouth, he goes on about his day without any trouble. Good luck!

I do cut out solids every once in a while....mostly the lunch portion. He doesn't take a paci but we try to pop a puff in when he starts to whine to see if it's just for that reason. I actually asked pedi the question of "how much he should be eating?" and his response was, I have no answer, as every baby is different. He told me how many oz's a FTT baby would eat so as long as he was under that on formula, no concern. His almost 21 month old sister weighs 30 lbs, so it's just their genetics. P.S. I'm their foster mom and have had them for 5 weeks. I've been told that dad was a big baby too. Other than that, I don't know much. He definitely tells me when he's not hungry anymore. I'm just going to continue going off of his cues because frankly, that's all I have until the Pedi says stop. He also just started crawling 2 weeks ago and I thought he would have lost weight but he gained over a lb in 2 weeks.

Well if your LO is good about telling when he's had enough, then don't sweat it! If you don't mind my asking, was he and his sister getting the nutrition they needed from their birth parents/previous foster parents?

DS will be 7 months in about a week. he is in the 90% for height and weight.

He eats 30-35oz of formula a day and between 18-25oz of baby food a day (b/w 3 meals).

He gets 1 mum a day at dinner time.  He doesn't really get snacks, but he is eating about every 2 hours the way we alternate the formula and the solids.

I feel like he eats a ton, but I never force a last bite in him, in fact he would probably eat a few more bites when the food is gone.  He usually leaves about an ounce the bottom of his bottles (of course some days he is sucking them dry).

I don't think you LO is eating too much. but you may want to increase the amount of formula he is getting and cut back on the snacks.
