Twinkle light background?

I've seen the twinkle light background in a few holiday photos that have popped up lately.  It seems like a good alternative to the baby playing with a strand of lights (yes, lead, I know).

Does anyone have a how-to on that background?  I can't seem to find anything.

Thanks.

I tried it last night.  Basically find a rod that you can drape lights from.  I took a tension rod and set it across the hallway, and then used pipe cleaners to hang the lights from the rod (it's what I had).

I'm going to have to play with it more to get the lighting, etc. correct.

I don't know if this is obvious to you, and if it is disregard this response :), but be sure to have your subject at least a few feet away from the lights (farther is better) and use a wide aperture... as wide as you comfortably can go.

Can you post an example of this?  I'd be happy to discuss possible setups.

I am pretty sure that this is the kind of photo that is being referred to.  I would also love to hear any ideas, and also camera settings to achieve this look (or is it just the distance that will create enough bokeh - given the correct lens).

This is achieved by using wide apertures and setting up the background some distance away from the subject.  Ideally, you use a lens with an aperture of F2.8 or faster, or the background will need to be placed very far away.  To be safe, use a medium focal length and set your ISO to get a shutter speed between ~1/100 and your max flash synch speed (usually 1/200 - 1/250).  If you are using natural light, go as high as you want. The highlights will only look perfectly round when using high quality lenses.  Inexpensive lenses such as the 50mm 1.8 will produce octagon shaped highlights.  This is because the better lenses have more aperture blades and they have curved edges, coming closer to the shape of a perfect circle.

Thanks ladies.

I was actually thinking about the background that someone mentioned on here a few weeks ago.  I think it involved putting the Christmas light tips through poster board or something like that.
