anyone try/do prenatal yoga? experience>?

I am gaining weight and feel out of shape.  I normally am not a HUGE exerciser, so would have to start doing something low impact. (I guess goes with anything pregnancy) however, has anyone tried/do prenatal yoga.  a studio by my house does sunday classes? is it worth the money? experince?  fitness? TIA

I love it! Mainly it helps me focus, relax, stretch, increase muscle endurance and work on certain positions (my instructor has us work on different possible birthing positions). It does not, however, burn a lot of calories, and I don't think it affects my weight at all. I do it for different wellbeing reasons. I like working on breathing, feeling my muscles, feeling my "new" body move, de-stressing, and talking with other pregnant women.

In fact, on NPRs Science Friday last week they discussed how a study has shown that yoga itself will not help you burn more calories to loose weight. In fact they talked about how yoga can actually slow your metabolism. However, the psychological effects of yoga can have an impact on your weight and health. For example, if you do yoga you may be less likely to emotionally eat or stress eat. Here is the info if you are interested:

I used to teach yoga so I have a lot of yoga experience.  If you're looking for a workout, most prenatal yoga classes (including mine) just won't do it for you -- they are heavy on stretching and relaxation.  I'm a runner so that's my preferred workout for pregnancy.  You can have an incredibly low fitness level for prenatal yoga so if you'd like to give it a try, go for it.

I love doing yoga each day, I do a little each morning- the stretching helps wake me up and I do birth positions.... helps me get focused for the day... then I do stretching and relaxing at night before bed and it helps me sleep more comfortably.  I also walk to help maintain my weight and use an elliptical and stationary bike.  I don't really feel like the yoga burns calories, but when I feel good throughout the day I make better eating and activity choices.

I do one that I can stream through netflix, not sure of the name, it is very relaxing, but not very 'work out'  If you want to burn some calories, take a 20 minute walk, then follow that up with 20 minutes of yoga.

I love my prenatal yoga class for the stretches and body preparation for birth, not to mention getting to meet other pregnant women!

However, to keep "fit" during pregnancy and control my weight gain, I've been swimming and doing aquacise.

Good luck and have fun!

This is too funny! Now I'm going to Amazon.com to see if I can find a cheap DVD. Yoga was recommended to me yesterday. I should get my lazy, out of shape a$$ up and do something! ;)

Just started taking prenatal yoga at a studio near me last week and I LOVE it!!  I think its totally worth looking in to.  Most studios have a drop-in rate, so you can go check it out, some even offer the 1st class free.

I wouldn't consider it a workout however.  I'm walking at least 30 min, 3x a week as my workout.

I did yoga up until 35 weeks with DD (2x/wk at a studio) and I'm doing the same this time around. I strongly recommend it--it helped with breathing, relaxation, endurance and flexability, all which come into play for the birthing process. I attend a regular class, but have done so for 7+ years, and I just modify poses as needed to accomodate my physical limitations. If you are new to yoga, definitely do a prenatal class.

I started taking a prenatal yoga class and I enjoy it.  It's worth the money and the instructor will help you find poses that work for your body.  It will help relax you and keep your muscle toned.

If you want to keep your weight in check, you are also going to have to do cardio aerobic exercise though.  You can go for walks or use an elliptical or stationary bicycle for something low impact.

I also really want to do yoga. Can anyone recommend a specific DVD? There are soooo many out there, and I hate bubbly irritating instructors. Also the kind of instructors who talk about your chakras lining up and all that bull.
