Tips for heartburn

I have been getting heartburn frequently lately and it seems it comes most of the time from drinking water. Any tips on how to make it better? I never really got it before I got pregnant.

You can try Tums, those worked for me a for a while. Once it got worse, I had to switch to Pepcid but I would ask your doctor what they recommend if the Tums stops helping. Good luck, I know how much it sucks!!

For now I am trying to survive on tums and mylanta because I KNOW it's only going to get worse, that's when I'll bust out the Zantac.  Lovely having all your insides smushed up :)

I have been the same way since a week before I even knew I was pregnant, it's been horrible!  Tums are really the best because they are fast and they have calcium which is good for baby!  However, after awhile, I couldn't stomach them anymore, so I have switched to Zantac.  Both are safe for baby, and it really helps!

 Good luck!

Try drinking room temp water, not iced, sometimes iced water can make it worse on your stomach.  I also get it from water, and pretty much everything else.  I've been taking Zantac since the end of 1st Tri, I took it most of 3rd with my first.  I probably should tell my OB I'm taking it though, I have a different one this time. I take one at 7am and another at 7pm.

Tums make me want to puke.

Papaya.  You can try the papya enzymes in tablet form or buy dried papaya spears at the grocery/health food store.  My grocer caries it in the produce section.

I take tums and try not to lay down after I eat (I have to wait 4 hours or so).

I just took a nap today after lunch and had to get up because of the heartburn :(

My OB has me on Prilosec and it does wonders most of the time, when that doesn't control it I use tums as well (but be careful, eating too many can cause constipation).

Try not laying down after eating or drinking, and elevating yourself to sleep if it is bad at night.

I've had heartburn/acid reflux as long as I can remember, and a trick I learned from a chemistry class in college is "buffering" - it sounds weird, but take a decent swig of mountain dew and it will buffer the acid in your stomach (brings down the pH)... tends to work most of the time! I usually do this if I don't have anything else available.

Also, I can't tolerate water right now, it makes me nauseus and increases my heartburn too - I've been drinking alot of lemonade and fruit juice. Things like milk, alot of caffiene, carbonation, acid based foods (tomato-y for me in particular), spicy foods, fried foods, etc. tend to aggravate it so it's best to stay away from them. (so much for my Mexican cravings!) Good luck!

I read that Papaya was on the do not eat list, as it can cause contractions.

I used Tums Smoothies and lots of milk!

I have been using Tums. I don't have heartburn I have indigestion but the medicines are the same for both. I asked my pharmacist yesterday what she would recommend from the list my doctor gave me and she said Pepcid is great because its once a day, and a form of it is given to infants if they need it. (Not sure how we would know if they have heartburn but it must be for something else).

Tums. Some other women I know have taken things like pepcid if it's really bad, but for that option I would consult your dr first.

Good luck.
