Bumper questions

Bumpers usually come with crib sets, but I know they are very controversial, and some cities (like Chicago) have outlawed them due to safely concern.

So I'm curious.... Who plans on using the bumper in the crib?  What led you to that decision?

If you're not going to use it, what are you going to do with it?

I am not going to. I don't want to because there is just so much evidence that they are not safe. There is the suffocation thing and the decreased airflow around the baby. If at some point the baby has issues getting limbs suck (which is supposed to be rare) then I'll get a breathable bumper.

So I'm just getting sheets. I'm getting blankets for elsewhere but they won't go in the crib anyways. And I'm making a crib skirt myself.

I'm going without a bumper. I am not getting a pre-put together set, so I'm just not getting one.  I'm getting my bedding from babybedding.com - you can buy things piece by piece or do custom with their fabrics, and their stuff is really cute and not overly baby. I am getting some fabric from them in the patterns I had my bedding made out of and having throw pillows made to put in the crib (when not in use of course - they will come out when baby goes in) to help give it the "finished" look that a bumper gives.

We never used one.  We just bought a sheet set, so never had one.

we tried no bumbers with H but he kept sticking his legs/arms out of it. So we went with the breathable ones & they have worked great since then!!

We're going bumper-free while the baby is very young. Once the baby is a little bigger and older and we eventually have to lower the mattress (still figuring out how this crib works lol), I plan on putting a breathable bumper in there.

I will use them only when the baby is a little bigger and not infant. Just because of the controversy, and not to mention that I didn't use it with my first child.

I found a couple sets that didn't have them. They put stuff like wall decor instead. Or the diaper hanger, which I want anyway. As they say, your baby does not have the strength to roll themselves into a crib side and get hurt and as long as the crib is in standard crib-slat size, the baby should be fine to move around without getting their limbs stuck. IMHO

I don't plan to used them. If I happen to get a crib set I'm going to convert the bumpers into rail protectors like this one.

I'm not using one, so I didn't get a bedding set.  I'm just buying fitted sheets and a bed skirt separately that I like from pottery barn kids.  Most of the stuff in a bedding set seems like a waste to me since I wouldn't use it.  I don't really even know why it is so hard to get separate  bedding pieces at the big baby stores.

I'm not using one. I do live in Chicago but decided against them before the ban was put in place. I just don't see the need for one. Because of that, there really wasn't any use in buying a crib set so I just bought sheets.

Most new crib sets don't come with bumpers.  Don't buy one; problem solved.

My mom is planning on having the crib bumper in for decoration when baby isn't at her house, but knows it will be removed before the kid sleeps in the crib (we live close and will probably spend a few nights up there a month - I told her she didn't have to buy a crib and we could use PnP but she wanted one).

I will only *consider* a breathable bumper once the baby is big enough to move around IF there is actually a problem of limbs getting stuck in crib slats (this really is not an issue for most babies.)

We choose and chose not to use crib bumpers, but I specifically did not buy infant/baby bedding sets so I never had bumpers to get rid of. I only purchased or made single fitted sheets for the crib mattress, so it wasn't really an issue (btw, making your own fitted sheets is REALLY simple)

We didn't a won't. We just bought sheets not a set. I heard they are starting to sell bedding sets without bumpers now.

I actually talked to my doctor about this today.  She said when they are infants it is okay to have a bumper as they are not moving around when the sleep.  However, as soon as the baby begins moving around at night the bumper needs to be removed.  She did recommend getting a mesh bumper, which can be used in infancy and when baby starts moving around.  I don't know what mesh ones look like, I would imagine they aren't as asthetically pleasing but might be worth looking into :)

I will be using a bumper strictly for decoration but it will come out of crib as soon as little one goes into crib to sleep. I figure the first few months she will not be sleeping in the crib anyway so I will use it until then. After that it will come out completely and I will find a new use for it. Maybe try what was done in the previous post with the picture.

With LO#1, we didn't use one until he was around a year old- at that point he became a very active sleeper and would wake himself up thrashing into the bars. He was old enough to not suffocate but young enough to still be in a crib and when we put them in his crib, it was like a revelation. His wake up time moved from 6:30 to 8:30 starting on night number one.

That being said, I wouldn't NOT buy a set because it comes with a bumper- you may find that it comes in handy later when it is more safe. However, I would never use one in a teeny baby's crib because of the risk of suffocation.

DD slept in our room in her bassinet until about 10 months old at which time we moved her to her crib, with bumpers. She was walking, crawling, and pulling up easily on her at that point and was able to easily move herself from the bumpers should she need to (though she has never rolled even remotely close to them in her sleep). I felt at that point they were fine considering how mobile she was, we have not and will not use them with a newborn ever.
