how to prep for transition mtg?

DS will have his first IFSP to IEP transition mtg at the end of March. He turns 3 in Sept which is when he'd either be dropped or placed on an extended IFSP.

Currently he's receiving 2 hours speech from county & we recently dropped OT to "consult only" b/c we've really taken most of what she can do & implemented into daily life. We get an additional hour of speech privately as well as 6 hours ABA & 2 hours of "storyplay" (aka therapeutic playgroup for SN toddlers).

His therapist has made multiple comments about how given his progress he's most likely not going to qualify for any services past Sept. I just can't wrap my head around losing his "support system" and forging this "alone" for the next 3 years until he would start kindergarten.

I'm just starting to get a hang of IEP/IDEA/504 and all the jargon. Are there any resources you'd recommend to help me prepare for his meeting so I know what they are talking about/our rights/etc?

(oh...DS is PDD-NOS, SPD, Fraglie X, x-33 wk premie, allergic to top 8...and the list goes on...)

Help! I feel like I'm drowning in uncertainty.

Well, your first transition meeting is probably going to only consist of going over medical history, parental concerns, filling out paperwork, etc.

Then, an evaluation of your child will be scheduled.  Based on your post, I would expect evluations by a diagnostitian, OT and SLP.  These evaluations will determine if your child qualifies for services since the standard for need is different once you hit age 3.

After that, an eligibility meeting will take place at which time an IEP will be drafted if your child qualifies for services.

So, you have plenty of time to "learn" the lingo :)

Just like the PP said...the intial meeting will really just go over  the evals that will be done.  I would say a psychological, speech, OT...considering your child has Fragile X you may want to have them request a developmental pediatric eval as well.  Just remember that you do not have to sign anything at any meeting...you always have time to bring the info home and re read and absorb it.  They will give you a copy of the eval plan and ask you to sign it...if you agree then sign and then they have (90 days in NJ) to complete the evals and reconvene with the results.  Again..in NJ you are required to have the results of the evals 10 days prior to the meeting when you discuss them.  If you are unsure...just don't sign anything and go home and think about it.  You are right on track in terms of transitioning which is great....I see many parents come in when their child turns three and then there is a lapse of service because the evals need to be done.

BTW...prior to becoming a SAHM...I was a preschool school psychologist.

We saw an increase in services when we transitioned. We went from speech 2x per month for 30 minutes to once a week for 30 minutes when she was 3. At 4 they bumped it up to 1 hour per week plus OT for 30 minutes per week (she also gets 1.5 of outside speech per week). At almost 6 and in kindergarten she gets the same supports plus someone coming into the class to help with the social issues and behavior problems that she has. She is currently working with an apraxia and developmental delay diagnosis. I do need to get her back to the dev. pedi to see how he feels about the pdd-nos possibility that he's talked about in the past. We've discussed it, but he wasn't ready to give her an actual diagnosis at the time.
