Have you heard of myo-inositol for PCOS?

Since my PCOS diagnosis, I've been going crazy doing internet research. My most recent find has me seriously intrigued, and I was wondering if anyone had tried it/heard of it - myo-inositol.

It's in the B vitamin family, and appears to have very similar effects to metformin, but without the nasty GI side-effects. There have been a number of randomized clinical trials that have been performed that show it works to induce ovulation/regular cycles/nicer quality eggs in women with PCOS. This blog is a year old, but it sites a number of useful studies on the topic.

The most recent article that turned me on to this is found here

Hopefully my html linking skills worked there ... if not, I'll come back and fix it.

Obviously I won't go dosing myself with this stuff until I do some more research and talk to my RE (and convince my husband I'm not nuts about this), but I was wondering what people thought of this, and wanted to share this information for other PCOSers it might help!!

I also have pdfs of a review of the RCTs that've been done and the trial comparing myo-inositol to metformin if anyone is interested - PM me and I can email it to you or something!

Sent you an email! I'd be very interested to hear what your RE says about it. I don't have an awesome rapport with mine, so I'm almost hesitant to bring it up, so it could help knowing what another RE thinks of it first!

Sent you an email! I hope it can help your sister - the reports I've read so far show no side-effects (which is quite remarkable in the scheme of pharmaceuticals these days!)!

*blushes* Aww, thanks. Being in research in the sciences has some benefits - along with a need to research things exhaustively, access to papers through my university is one of them!

hi yes i have heard of inositol for PCOS. I was like many searching clicking and trying to find remedies for pcos. I went to the doctor but the meds they gave seemed to make the problem worse. perhaps i needed to wait longer. However I was going for something natural. I have been taking inositol for 3 months and also combining Choline. I hadnt had a period in over six months. I had my first cycle last month. the inositol improved my high cholesterol-or shall I say made it normal, my blood pressure is good. I am on a diet but Im able to loose the weight I love inositol. It is a ,life saver
