Dressing young infants during winter

I'm a first time mom with a 3 month old.  I got a handmedown JJ Cole bundleme and was planning to use it for the carseat until I saw on this forum that it is not safe to use.  Also other members were saying to dress my baby lightly as too much clothing (ex. parka/snowsuits) can be dangerous as it can compress during car accidents and leave extra room between baby and harness straps. I know I can lay extra blankets on baby to keep him warm.

My question is what to do during next winter when my son moves onto the convertible car seat?  Since those are stationary and not meant to be carried around - can I dress him in snowsuits to keep him warm or do I still have to dress him lightly (no extra bulk between him and straps).  If so how am I suppose to keep him warm when I transport him from the car to daycare/mall etc?  Put his snowsuit on after we arrive to destination before we get out of the car? if so isn't that a big hassel and still has a chance for him to catch a cold?  i'm confused....

You don't catch a cold from being cold, you catch a cold from being inside all winter with other people. So you don't have to worry about him getting sick.

For really cold days, yeah I think I"m just going to have to put his coat on him really fast after we park if we're going to be walking along way to the entrance. If DH is driving with us somewhere, he'll usually drop us off/pick us up at the entrance. If he were doing that, I may not bother with a full-on coat for him, I'd just walk really fast. He'll wear a hat and mittens in the car, and it doesn't get insanely cold here, so I think we'll be ok. I don't know about people further north!

This. Bring a blanket with you, if you're really concerned, and wrap LO in it once you're out of the car if you must.

I dress my LO in pants, long-sleeved shirt, a light fleece jacket, socks, a hat, and a fleece blanket over top. I asked the Dr at her 4 month appt about snowsuits and car seats and was told that yes generally that is thought of as unsafe but in Wisconsin when it gets to be 20 below outside it's best to have baby in a snowsuit anyway. I'm going to try at all costs to not take lo out on days like that but sometimes you just can't help it and it can stay that temp for days!

We just throw a really warm blanket over DD to transport her from the car to another indoors space. If it's really cold you could also put a hat on LO.

Can someone share why a BundleMe is not considered safe?

It goes between the baby's back and the straps.  No car seat is tested with after market products like that and it can cause the straps to be too loose around the shoulders, meaning the baby can fly out in a crash.  Same reason why you only put them in the car seat in regular clothes and not big puffy coats/snowsuits.

Google car seat lady, it may change your opinion. It is not safe. She shows a way to cut the part that goes in between the baby and straps so that you can safely use it.

Yes there are holes but let's use an extreme example to show why it's not safe.  Pretend you had a small air filled pillow you could put behind the baby that also had slits to feed the harness through.  The straps feels tight because you've gotten them as tight as you can at the time.  Now picture you're driving along and the pillow bursts and all the air comes out, compressing the pillow.  The straps are no longer tight.  Same idea.  You are adding something to their back that can shift and compress.

Also, the argument that someone has survived something unsafe is ridiculous.  Most people will survive almost ANY situation.  It's the ones who don't that are the problem.  We all survived NO car seats.  Some didn't and they aren't here to defend the issue, kwim?  Why can't you use what has been proven safe like blankets or the shower cap style covers?

You can use it all you want, it isn't safe. I bought one and fully intended on using it with DS last year...until the ladies on here (thankfully) changed my mind. I hope they change yours too.

And some women don't feel unsafe drinking and smoking during their pregnancies, or smoking around their children. Doesn't mean it isn't true.

Maybe so but let me say this and I say it with all sincerity to him.  It would serve everyone in this world well to at least be willing to listen to people who are sharing information that is in the best interest of their child.  I didn't call anyone a name, I didn't say anything insulting.  I shared factual information in the hopes that you would be swayed to reconsider and anyone who lashes out at that is allowing their ego and defensiveness to rise above the duty we have as parents to take in the information important to the well being of our children.

I've been there - I've been told by a friend that I was doing something unsafe.  I was embarrassed.  No one wants to think they made a decision that wasn't the best one.  But that's life.  You learn as you go but you have to be willing to always be in learning mode.  Being blind and deaf to information is truly the ONLY way you can fail your children.

I got the version of the bundle me that only goes over the top part of the bucket seat. I chose this one because dd always gets too hot in the carseat anyway, so I thought adding an extra layer behind her would just make her hotter. I guess it's just an extra bonus that the other one is unsafe... I had no idea bit it makes sense!

It was also half the price, so check it out.

All this.  No one has ever frozen to death walking from the car to the mall without a coat.  Truthfully, unless it's storming, I often do that myself on purpose because once inside I'm roasting and it's a PITA to carry the coat with me.  Keep his head and hands covered and throw a nice heavy blanket over him in the carseat/stroller and he'll be fine.

This is what I do :)

Is it considered OK to use the BundleMe in the stroller when out for walks?

yes, the problem is for car collisions because it compresses and the baby may be ejected from the seat. For the car you can cut the back part and use it. Check out car seat lady on youtube.

Well isn't he a sweetie.

Seriously though, it isn't safe. This isn't a "the research is mixed" or "it's a gray area." I know not one car seat tech that would endorse the use of a bundle me or snow suit. Why would you purposely do something known to be dangerous?

I wouldn't turn my 15 month ff either, but I'm not debating that now.

we dress him in a long sleeve and pants and throw a thick blanket on him.  The car is heated so I don't want to to get crazy hot if we aren't going to go out into the cold.  If we're going for a walk we'll put him in a warmer snow suit in the stroller.

If you are using an infant seat you can get the shower cap style cover.

My LO is in a convertable and we live in MN...cold winters!  I plan on warming the car first and she will wear pants, long sleeves, a fleece jacket, and fleece-lined boots.  We keep blankets in the car that I can cover her with after she is buckled in.  When walking to and from places I will add a hat, mittens, and throw a blanket over her if it is really cold/snowy/windy.

Why don't you just get the bundle me that's a shower cap style. It goes over the car seat and I believe it poses no safety concern.

Because I already have the other style of bundle me. And once you cut the back, it is not a concern either. I live in Canada where it's damn cold, so we will need it!
