Cold-Weather Question: Transporting baby and running with baby

As a FTM, I'm struggling a bit with finding the best way to take care of DS when we're outside in this cold weather. First, how do you deal with a coat AND car seat? I realize that it's most comfortable for him to have his coat off when he's in the car seat, but do you take it off outside of the car, or in the carseat? He HATES having me try to cram his coat on him in such a little space. There's got to be a better way.

Also, for those of you who go jogging with your LO, do you still take him/her along during the cold weather? I've thought of just getting a weather shield for the stroller and bundling him up really well, but I don't want to do anything that would make him uncomfortable or jeopardize his health. Thoughts??

Always take off their jacket when putting them in their car seat! It's for saftey...jackets are too bulky so the straps won't fit like they are supposed to! I live in Alaska, so we've been dealing with the cold for awhile now. I keep DS in a sweatshirt, hat, and gloves while walking to and from the car. Once we get in I take everything off except the sweatshirt. I bring a bigger jacket if we are going to be outside longer but we are usually in and out really quick so I don't bother.

We through a warm blanket over him so it's easy to remove to get in and out of the carseat.

Coats in car seats are a big no-no. They are too bulky for the straps to fit properly. I have DS wear a thin fleece bunting and then I cover him with a blanket.

As for running, I'll be using the treadmill. It's just too windy & cold here. If it were only DS, I may take him out but my DD would seriously whine the whooooolllleee way. However, if you're going to take him out I think that's fine as long as you dress him appropriately. I would add a blanket over his coat because the movement of the stroller will make it "windy" for him.

I bought one of those layered type coats, so she can wear the first jacket part in the carseat without any safety issues and I can put the second part on her if we're outside.

I've been walking still and just make sure to keep a jacket, hat and shoes on her and then put a blanket under her legs, fold it over her legs from the side, and pull it up over her lap. I know they make stroller blankets, but this seems to serve the same purpose and with the snack tray on the stroller I wasn't sure if one would work for us. when it gets down into the 30's we'll probably just walk the mall.

Thanks, ladies! Didn't realize that a coat was such a big no-no in the car seat, so I'm glad I asked. Although, now I'm trying to figure out the logistics of getting a coat on him while keepin him warm when we get out of the car.

If your still carrying him I would just wrap him in a big blanket while you walk To the car. Then in the car, you can even put the blanket on top of him after you strap him in.
I still walk everyday outside, and although it hasn't been that cold yet high 40'slow 50's, I put her in a few layers, her hat and mittens, and put a blanket on her in the stroller. If it gets super cold, I'll drape a blanket over the front of her bob stroller so no wind hits her. Good luck!

Running? Are there zombies giving chase? ;-)  Haha, well joking aside if you put as many layers on baby as you have on you while outside, and you aren't cold, baby will be fine.  Cold air is good for them, cleans the body, kills germs.  If you're worried about wind while jogging just get a shield.  DD is turning 1 in a week so last winter she was out in the cold of new england and we didn't have any issues even at that age.  I babywear and at the dog park, I had her out at just above freezing in a onepiece fleece, hat, in a ring sling with my jacket around her and she kept me warm :-)

Throw a blanket around them and make a run for inside when out and about. DS is usually in weather appropriate clothing (sweater, pants, socks and shoes with a zip up hoodie in colder weather) so I really don't see the need in adding another bulky jacket. It's like 30 seconds in the cold...baby won't freeze to death.

Jogging...same thing...layers and a blanket over the top. If it's raining, drizzling or snowing...rain shield thing snaps over the jogging stroller. DS usually falls asleep while I'm jogging any ways.

Previous rule of thumb (can't remember where I read it...maybe a parenting book?) was if the tops of the head, hands and feet are kept warm you're good! Don't over think it too much!

Good rule of thumb! Looks like I'll go ahead and make the investment in a shield.
