Transition from Rock n Play

Visiting from 0-3 months...DD is only a week old but doesn't like sleeping flat. A mommy friend recommended the Rock n Play, but a different mommy friend told me that her LO had a very tough transition to sleeping flat after successfully using the RnP for several months. I would love to help DD (and us) sleep better at night, but I'm afraid of causing a problem later when we stop using it. Does anyone have experiences with the RnP and the transition after? TIA :o)

We used the rock n play and switched when DD was about 5 months to the crib and she did fine.  I have heard stories about people having a rough time though.  For us it was worth the sleep we got while she was in it while younger!  Even if the transition had been harder.

Same. DS sort of transitioned himself because he wanted to stretch out more around 4 months. He had reflux so it was a godsend for us.

My daughter got out of it very late she was 7 months and she transitioned just fine to sleeping flat. We had no problems.

DS slept in his for the first 3 to 4 months.  After that, it was a nightmare.  He slept in our bed until just last week (he is a year old today).  He still won't nap in his crib.  The RNP is my biggest regret.  My next baby will be in his crib from day one even if I have to put him on a wedge.

we used the rock n play until around 3- 3 1/2 months as well because our girls had reflux and it was the only way they would sleep comfortably. We just cold turkey switched them to their cribs. We made sure we just always swaddled them nice and tight.  The first few nights were a little rough but then they got the hang of it. By 4 months our girls were sleeping through the night in their cribs! :)

You can try elevating the mattress a little with a rolled up blanket under one side if that helps.

 Good luck!

We used the RnP from about 2 weeks to about 12 or so. I only ever used it for bedtime and used the swing, me, or her crib for naps.

I say it's worth it, a few longer stretches of sleep will help you be better prepared for the transition when LO is older and there are lots of tricks you can use to make that happen when you are ready!

We transitioned to the crib for nighttime sleep at about 6 weeks with no issues but they napped in them for a long time after that (and at my mom's the napped in them until maybe 2 months ago, but they're small). We loved them and would recommend them to anyone.

IMO ... first 6 weeks, you are in survivor mode ... get the RnP and get some sleep, deal with the transition later.

that said ... LO did great in the RnP ... he didn't love going 'flat' ... but it just took a few days and since i was well rested from the beginning, it was easier to deal with.

with a newborn, the rule is 'whatever gets you thru the night' ...

Exactly this. It was the best for naps and nighttime. Totally worth the small amount of trouble we had transitioning her to a crib at 6 months. Actually we had a harder time getting her out of the swaddle than getting her out of the RnP.

I totally feel like I'm in survivor mode! DD is only a week and a half and I can't tell if she is still learning how to BF or if she might have reflux. She sleeps fine during the day in her bouncer or with me, and she's more elevated then. I was hoping to try the RnP to see if that helped with fussiness and grunts at night, but I was afraid I'd be starting a bad habit. It sounds like any transition to crib later might be worth the extra sleep now? Maybe I'll give her a couple more nights before I go out and buy one...

thanks!

We used our RNP for probably the first 6 weeks. Then she would only sleep in her swing. We were able to transition her to a PNP and then a crib with no problems.

We LOVED the RnP.  Used it from day 1 until about 6 mo. when she was clearly getting to big for it.  She transitioned great.  I was worried she wouldn't b/c of everyone saying that but it was all worry for nothing.
