I know this is usually reserved for a third generation nickname however I really like it. Can this be used as a stand alone name?

I think it's cute! I would use it as a stand alone but I do tend to like the more untraditional names like Tripp.

It makes no sense as a stand alone name. It's clearly a NN- like Tre or Junior- and one with a strong meaning association. That Bristol Palin- a young girl whose own name is the British equivilent of b00bies- chose it only proves how downmarket it has become.

I like it! Just because it is someone "semi-famous'" son, doesn't mean I wouldn't use it. There are many celebrity children out there that share there name with other children around the world.
