Help! Becoming frustrated trying to figure everything out

Hello...just to introduce myself, my name is Jessie.  DH and I tried for 3 yrs to have our first, a beautiful baby boy.  He is 2 now, and we have been trying for a year to concieve again with no success.  I have been diagnosed with PCOS with insulin resistance since 2005 and had our son in 2010 with a total of 2 yrs on Metformin and clomid (3 months on 1 month off... and so on) the first time around.   This time, for the past 6 months I had been seeing a new ob/gyn, however after 6 months on clomid she has refused to see me anymore and is referring me to a fertility specialist.  I am so confused and frustrated bc my previous ob/gyn was willing to work with us on the low tech end, however when I was pregnant I really didn't like how they handled certain situations especially since it lead to an emergency c-section a month early.  I have made an appointment with a new ob/gyn for Dec 7th.  I just am concerned about trying to go to a fertility specialist mostly bc of the expense.  Been hearing that $20,000 dollars for ivf is cheap....... i know we can't afford that.  Also the nearest one is an hour away.  I don't know what to do anymore.  Do I just give in and go to a fertility specialist or keep my appt with the new dr and see what she thinks?

Agreed. And that seems like a lot of clomid. Good luck with your new doctor or RE!

I completely agree. I think you are wasting time seeing an ob. Odds are slim anyone is going to go the clomid route with you anymore since you've taken it for so long (my RE won't go over 6 total cycles). Is it just cost you are concerned with? Your insurance, if you have it, should cover the same with an RE as with your ob. You certainly don't have to do Ivf, but could do injectable meds WITH monitoring and an Iui and that  would be less than $600, but increase your odds significantly over what you've been doing. You need more testing if you haven't had it yet, sperm analysis, hsg, bloodwork for hormone levels, follicle counts, etc, etc... If these things aren't done you would be wasting a huge amount of money with an ob if there was a problem and it wasn't caught.

10/11: after 2 years, saw a RE, FSH 5.4

Welcome!

^^^This. It might not be what you want to hear, but it's your best bet for getting the care you need. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to need IVF either. You need to find out why the previous treatments weren't working and most OBs aren't equipped to do all of the necessary testing and monitoring.

I agree with the other girls.  You need to go see an RE.  I drive 2 1/2 hours each way to see my RE and it is worth it.

Yeah I know..... I guess I am just nervous about the unknown.  I went through the HSG the first time (2009) so I am not super excited about repeating it.  Whatever it takes though.  And yes I do have insurance, just not sure how much they will cover.  I know they don't cover the HSG but that is not that expensive.  Guess I will be contacting a RE in the morning.... here we go!

Good luck =) I found I liked the RE better than the OB we were working with prior, so it's not all bad!

RUN AWAY from any OB/GYN that is treating you for infertility.  There is a lifetime max of 6 cycles on Clomid.  It seems like you have had MUCH more than that.  There is a higher risk of cancer with that.  OB/GYNs have no idea how to get people pregnant.  Did you have blood work and ultrasound monitoring on Clomid?  SA? CD3 b/w?

You need to go to the RE...hands down!  Going to the RE does not mean you will be spending $20,000.  There are many treatments they can do before IVF.  You may have been wasting a lot of time and causing harm to your body by seeing an OB/GYN.

Ditto PP. Seeing a RE doesn't automatically mean you're doing IVF and paying out of pocket for it. There are lots of less invasive measures that REs can use, but it all depends on your diagnosis. Which you need the proper testing to get. Whatever you do, do NOT take Clomid again. Tell your RE how many cycles you've taken it- do not let them try to give it to you.

I have had way more than 6 cycles of clomid and both ob/gyn's that I went to never said anything pertaining to the fact that it could be harmful.  The only monitoring they did was the last ob/gyn I saw drew labs on cd3 and cd21 which confirmed no ovulation and that was the last cycle I was on.  She then told me she was referring me to a specislist.  DH and I decided to wait a few months bc my hormones were out of whack.... very emotional and moody.  Few months have passed and I am glad I decided to get on here bc I am learning so much more than I ever knew the first time around.  This time I decided I want to be more informed bc last time I felt so out of the loop and just trusted that the dr knew best.
